Great location for exploring Cork and surrounds, beautiful hotel with lovely dining and bar areas. We booked a mini suite and were pleasantly surprised to receive a sweet treat and a bottle of prosecco in the room on arrival. Dinner in the evening was excellent, efficient service and absolutely delicious food. Full 3 course meal with drinks for two of us was ~€100. We also had drinks in the bar after dinner, it was lovely and quiet and the service was also good.
Unfortunately our breakfast experience left us extremely disappointed. We had booked in for 9.30am, there were a couple in front who hadn't booked but were accommodated while we waited and then we were shown to our table and told about the set up - buffet for cereals/juice/pastries/toast and then someone would take our hot food order. We helped ourselves to cereal and juice and then waited, and waited - it was 20 minutes before we could get anyone to take our hot food order and then another 25 minutes before our food turned up. From being seated to receiving our hot food, it was just over an hour. We also had to ask someone for tea and coffee as they had neglected to ask us this on seating us, as we had seen them do for others. The young waiter was apologetic but there seemed to be a lack of servers and communication between front and back of house. On returning to our room, we were surprised to find one of only two servers that we had seen in the dining room was also doing room service deliveries!
On check-out we raised the issue with the receptionist when she asked how our stay had been, she again apologised and removed the cost of 2 breakfasts from our bill. There were some attempts to excuse the experience by way of blaming people not booking in but it was clear that it was a combination of this and poor organisation in both the dining room and the kitchen. There was a stark difference between the exemplary, calm evening dinner service and chaotic, agitated breakfast team... Maybe they were short staffed but this wasn't mentioned, or even used as an excuse. In the end, the quality of the breakfast food was average, cheap cereal, sausages and pudding and it was not worth the advertised €16. We were also put off by the note on the menu that said any additional items added to the full or mini breakfast would be charged at €5/item!
It was very disappointing to have our experience with the hotel end in this way, we would be reluctant to return despite all other aspects being favourable.
