This was by far my favorite hike in Sedona. Not too many tourists here. The hike goes way up in elevation but is worth it even if you have to take your time. The views at the top are amazing. And it's dog friendly!!

Jim Thompson trail is similar to many other trails in Sedona with great views of redrocks, but what makes this special is adding the extra 0.7mile (each way) to go to the end of the Wilson Canyon trail, which is fantastic.
Jim Thompson is very open and exposed to the sun, but the breezes kept up cool and the surprise of Wilson Canyon was awesome (to left, away from Midgley Bridge) at the end of Jim Thompson.

Trailhead parking is tight as there are multiple trails starting at this spot. There was an empty large parking area for horse trailers that was locked off. The trail gradually climbs up to the base of the rock formation cliff and then follows the cliff in a more of less level path over to a vista near entrance of Oak Creek Canyon. The trail then descends down to the Wilson Canyon trail. The vista prior to this last decent is not marked. Good views looking out over downtown Sedona towards Cathedral Rock area. Trail is fairly easy but also is long enough for a good workout.

The Jim Thompson Trail offers a great variety of scenes to view as you hike along. The trail is well-maintained and pretty easy with only a few ups and downs when accessed from the Jordan Road trailhead. It becomes a bit more strenuous from the Wilson Mountain side but still easily hike-able for most skill levels. This was one of our favorite trails that we hiked during our visit. We only saw 3 other people on the trail the same time we were on it.

The trail head is so close to Uptown Sedona I'm surprised that it is not more popular. The parking lot is easily accessible. Don't be frightened by the 50 yard section of flat rock you drive over. We had a Camaro convertible and it was no issue whatsoever. The trail offers stunning views of the rocks. If you hike in the late afternoon, the sun shines on the the side of the rocks you are hiking. I do not think this would be a good early morning hike, as the sun would not as spectacularly illuminate the red rock. I say that with some facetiousness, as any time of day would be good. There is ample shade on the first mile, perfect for a hot day. This hike is a hidden gem. Check it out! Only 2 cars in the entire lot at 4PM on September 14.
