Sedona has a wide variety of restaurants but we found this unusual one recently. What we found is that Avano Bistro is a contemporary, upscale bistro which offers a diverse selection of unique, artisan cuisine. The presentation of the food was delightful and everything was soooo fresh! What the owner told us is that means new items will come and go with each season, and every weekend. I enjoyed the Grilled Lamb Polpette with jasmine rice, roasted artichoke, confit tomatoes, and tzatziki. My friend had the Vegetable Ratatouille en Croute with toasted cashew romesco and loved it. We loved it!

We have gone here twice. The first time we tired to order wine and the waiter said they were in the process of changing the wine list, "the wine you'd like we don't have anymore". They had just opened in the last couple of weeks. I give it a "so, so" rating because my pizza was good and hot but the salads that three of us had was not good or fresh and a person with us had a "special" chicken with balsamic reduction and was as dry as a bone. They had three larger parties there of eight and one party that came after us was served first and we only saw one waiter. Probably why the chicken sat in the oven. Second time we had a coupon as a "locals on Thurs. discount" but when we tried to use it they said "you have to eat in house" and "they forgot to put that on the coupon". The coupon is still running in the local paper with no change. They couldn't handle a dinner service of 30?

Joined by a friend, we decided to try the NEW Avano Bistro. Located in the space that used to be occupied by Apizza Heaven.
Upon entering, the place has a clean contemporary vibe. Muted colors and tasteful artwork on the walls. Soft modern and contemporary jazz and soft rock played through the sound system. We were promptly greeted and seated by a very gracious hostess whom I believe was the owner.
Nate was our server, who greeted us at the table, presented wine list and menu, and brought us Amuse and water. We started with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. After reviewing the menu we decided to allow the Chef (Joe Wickham) and our server to select dishes for our meal.
First up was a medley of appetizers consisting of a BEAUTIFUL Spanakopita, flakey and delicate, artfully filled with spinach and artichoke. Along side was a portion of Crispy Spinach, fresh and covered with crumbled feta and fresh cracked pepper. Finishing the plate was an amazing Caprese! 5 different Heirloom tomatoes with a flavorful house-made and hand pulled mozzarella drizzled with a delicious balsamic reduction.
Our server then suggested two different wines to go with our entrée. We decided on Ferrari Carano Siena. A wine with Sangiovese, Merlot, and Malbec blended together. A GREAT suggestion. Wine was presented and served all in a timely manner in very nice stemware!
Entrée was a duo of DELICIOUS offerings. First was a beautiful trio of Crab and Shrimp Ravioli served with crisp snap peas, sauce nantua (a classic French sauce made from Béchamel and shrimp and crab butter), and blistered heirloom cherry tomatoes. The ravioli, was as fresh as could be and the pillows were filled with a glorious mixture of crab and shrimp. The silky nantua sauce had the creaminess of expertly made Béchamel and the long sea-fresh brininess of the ocean! Just PERFECT! Also on our plate was the Grilled Fillet Mignon on top of rustic Yukon mashed and zucchini along side a glistening Beurre Rouge sauce. WOW!!! The fillet was prepared with perfect precision. Sent out medium rare, I hardly needed a knife the beef was so tender. The rustic mashed just enough of the Yukons left in the mashed to allow a generous texture of luscious potato goodness. The Beurre rouge sauce was the ideal sauce to compliment, but NOT over-power the beef! The Ferrari Carano Siena was a delicious compliment to both the Ravioli and the Filet!
After all that, just a coffee was needed to end a tremendous dinner! Locals may remember this location for pizza (which is still available). But this is NOT the same place as it used to be. New owner Erica Dolgos along with Chef Joe Wickham seem headed for "Culinary Stardom" here at Avano Bistro. The owner told us she will be rolling out a new and progressive wine list soon that will explore the world just as the Chef has brought to the menu.
Look for this place to make a mark in the Sedona area for food, wine, and ambiance! There is a beautiful outdoor seating area that makes "Alfresco" dinning a must as the evenings become more enjoyable temperature-wise.

An absolute gem!

avano's bistro took over from apizza heaven, which was a good restaurant, and has painted, lightening the interior. in addition, the owners feature large, framed photos of the area from the gallery next door. all in all, it is a most pleasant change. as to the food, what we had was excellent. my wife had pasta bolognese the sauce of which she pronounced as good as her own, and she is a good italian cook. i had the chicken breast stuffed with chorizo and spinach; while it made my mouth burn, it was wonderful. this entree came on a bed of couscous and was topped with a pickled vegetable relish. it was delicious. the wine list, however, was nothing to write home about. according to the waitress, they are cleaning out the old selection to bring in new. regardless, the food and ambiance make avano worth a return.

I just went to the former Apizza Heaven that is now renamed and restyled as Avano Bistro. I went for happy hour and had the rustic hummus and falafel appetizer. It was awesome, but you have to like garlic. The rough ground chick peas were great rather than the usual, run of the mill pureed style of hummus. Great salt and garlic punch. If this is any indication of how the rest of the place is being upgraded, then I am looking forward to coming back very soon.
