Owner description: Slide Rock State Park, originally the Pendley Homestead, is a 43-acre historic apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon. Frank L. Pendley, having arrived in the canyon in 1907, formally acquired the land under the Homestead Act in 1910. Due to his pioneering innovation, he succeeded where others failed by establishing a unique irrigation system still in use by the park today. This allowed Pendley to plant his first apple orchard in 1912, beginning the pattern of agricultural development that has dominated the site since that time. Pendley also grew garden produce and kept some livestock. As one of the few homesteads left intact in the canyon today, Slide Rock State Park is a fine example of early agricultural development in Central Arizona. The site was also instrumental to the development of the tourism industry in Oak Creek Canyon. The completion of the canyon road in 1914 and the paving of the roadway in 1938 were strong influences in encouraging recreational use of the canyon. Hence, Pendley followed suit and in 1933, built rustic cabins to cater to vacationers and sightseers. Todays visitors can still enjoy the fruits of Pendley's labor. Historic cabins are available for viewing, and the creek offers the park's namesake slide for adventures seekers and those looking for a place to cool off.

The setting is quaint and private, but it gets crowded as the weather gets warmer. This is another must stop if you want to see the best of Sedona and people watch. Parking can be a challenge.

“Arizona heat brings you to slide rock”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

Slide rock is one of the best places to visit in the summer time. With its cold water and beautiful scenery of mountains it's a place to remember. It's great with the kids although it's hard to get in from the burning heat to freezing water for them. They have fun going down the natural slides and splashing in the water. I give this 5 stars but one thing that bothers me is that it is a little slippery and I saw alot of people fall in slip. Also some of the rocks can cut your feet or hurt them so if I were you I would bring water shoes. But it's a fun great place for the kids and the grown ups too!!

“The state park”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

My husband and i had an enjoyable and relaxing hike in this park. We were fortunate enough to have a "private" walk with one of the rangers since no one else showed up for the scheduled nature hike. It's too bad that the state of Arizona doesn't help fund their state parks so there is an admission fee to these "little gems".

“Nice View from Across the Road”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

My daughter and I drove into the parking lot at the Slide-Rock state park and decided not to pay the ten dollar entrance fee to walk through the meadow with the other bunches of people. We drove up the road and found a parking spot along the road and hiked back to look at the slide-rock area from across the road. Looked beautiful and inviting, but lots of people. Can only imagine what this must be like in the summer time. It was worth the hike to see the pools and red rock areas though.
