Mel’s Diner is 5 minutes and 1.8 miles from the Downtown Phoenix intersection of North 1st Avenue and West Washington Street. The Diner has a classic 50’s/Hollywood motif. The décor is a little worn but the wear gives it character (see the attached photo of the sign out front). The staff is friendly, hardworking and knows their regular customers very well. The reasonably priced menu offers basic diner fare with a large selection of breakfast items served all day. One of us went for breakfast food on a Wednesday at 12:15 PM. The clientele was primarily older workers and retirees. We have sampled variations of the classic American breakfast of Scrambled Eggs or Egg Whites, Bacon or Sausage and Potatoes in many cities and a number of states so one of us tried this diner’s offering for comparison (see the attached photo). The portions were hearty and everything was well done (total cost with tax $9.73). Of particular note, the hash browns were nice and crispy, and had a good flavor. The coffee was good, not bitter and refilled without asking (always appreciated). The interior has plenty of light and seating including a long counter. If you like diners, or like to occasionally, or frequently, eat at local restaurants that are NOT chains, this place is worth a try.
