Whatever you are thinking this will be, it is ten times more. I have never had an experience as amazing as this. I loved it. John, Aspen and Lawrence was amazing to my group. I would love to come back on vacation here. The underground suite was so amazing.
Stumbled upon this place on my way through Route 66. For about $20 you get a guided tour that lasts about 45 minutes through an amazing cavern system with lots of cool history. The guide was great and really knew a lot and was happy to answer any questions. Worth the stop!
We did the 45-50 minute tour and it was well worth the cost of admittance. Our tour guide was Justine who was quite knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. The caverns were very cool and the history behind them intriguing to say the least. They are completely dry, a steady temperature all year 'round, and nothing lives down there...not even bugs. The Canyon Grotto restaurant looks like a unique place to have a meal. And speaking of unique, the 'bedroom' suite would be an amazing place to spend a night, 200 feet below ground!
So glad we decided to take the time to check out the caverns. We definitely recommend that others do the same. You don't need special footwear as the paths are all fairly smooth, though I would not recommend flip flops, of course. On the hilly parts of the path, there are either textured strips or steps, and there is always a rope or more solid banister to hold on to. They encourage photos if you wish to take them, but do NOT touch the walls of the cavern as they are susceptible to erosion from finger pressure, oil, and dirt.
History of the caverns was pretty cool even has a hotel room in the cavern. Really neat rock formations. They even have weddings down there!
The cavern tour was fun. The motel and breakfast were adequate.
The gas pumps are 50 years old and you have to prepay or leave your credit card with the clerk. The big surprise is gas was $5 per gallon! I shut it off as soon as I noticed it and went to the town of Peach Springs a few miles to the west and finished filling up for $2.59 per gallon. The clerk acted sheepishly when I asked if it was really true. She could/should have told me when I left my credit card. Now the exorbitant prices get listed in this review.
Go see the cave but stay in the town of Peach Springs.
I recommend you watch this place on an episode of Ghost Adventures before you visit. I did, and it was amazing to be in the actual spots where the paranormal activity was recorded! The elevator down only takes a few seconds and I believe it is the driest cavern in the USA. It is amazing down there, there is even a restaurant! Our tour guide was called Deano and he was very friendly. He took the time to show me many photos of ghosts he has captured down in the caverns (if you are reading this Deano I did message Zak from Ghost Adventures to urge him to contact you and visit again!..) The caverns are lit so it is not dangerous and you can even see a Giant Sloth which is amazing, which is now extinct, which once fell in to the caverns and sadly could not get out. It is scary to think that this creature was once real as it is so big! There are some amazing minerals down here too which you cannot touch as they will literally erode away if you do. You can't really believe that all of this is beneath your feet when you are upstairs in the restaurant and gift store. You also get a certificate after you have visited and I highly recommend eating at the restaurant. The food is so good that my family and I actually drove about 10 miles from our hotel just to eat here for our evening meal several times. I sadly did not get time to visit the Bunk House, but there are also some great photo opportunities outside. There is a little motel trail outside you can do too if you wish, but it does warn you about possible snakes. As you drive along the road to the caverns have a look in side the Radiator Springs Police car, as you see a scary scarecrow at the wheel which did scare me I must admit!.. When you enter from the main road you come to a little gift store and motel area. Turn left instead and drive up the road to reach the caverns.
