Pros:
1) Live music was very nice.
2) Horse back riding is very good.
3) There is hot water. Something not always had in Ecuador.
4) Beautiful area.
5) owner did try to make better after we were told her we were upset about being nickel and dime -ed.

Cons:
1) Very difficult to get to.
2) Room condition is pretty bad. But that really didn't bother me. But that may bother other folks.
3) Was charged $15 for horse back riding and wasn't told of the charge until checkout. At that time the host told me that we rode for 2 hours and we actually rode for less than one hour. He also said that there was a $7 charge for the guided hike but that he would not charge me for that also. Also there was no notification before the hike of that charge. And then I find out that there should never be a charge for the hike.
4) The total cost for our one night stay was $240. And that's for 2 adults that don't drink any alcohol.
5) Lunch is expensive.
6) Food is average.
7) Window in the room didn't shut completely which allowed insects to enter.

I should note that the owner did reimburse the horse back riding charges because of how upset we were. My opinion is that we never should have been charged for activities on the hacienda. That includes horse back riding. But, maybe I am just a cheap American. Who knows. Not sure what other folks think.

Dear guest,

It was a pleasure having you and your family of three at Hacienda Manteles on a special occasion like New Year's Eve. We are glad to know that your family enjoyed the Salasaca indigenous musical group. We thought it was so nice of your husband to play the guitar and to integrate with the Salasacas. The pictures came out so nice...and of course this presentation was part of the New Year's Event.

Sorry about the misunderstanding about the horses, we did give you the money back since it was our staff mistake not to tell you that there was an extra cost. However all this information is in our web site and when I talked to Margarita, the person who did the reservation for you I was clear in letting her know what was included and what was not included. Sorry for the misunderstanding, we will make sure all our future guests have this information. We did not charge you for any hike since this activity is included in the room rate. As I personally explained to you, those US$ 7.00 were for the soups the three of you had at lunch time, when you all arrived.

We are always working hard to make our guests' stay a happy and unforgettable one !

We will continue doing this in relation also to our rooms and services.

We hope that if you come in another occasion to the Hacienda your leg problem is gone and you can accompany your husband and daughter and enjoy ALL the activities we have to offer.

It was nice meeting your husband, your teenage daughter and yourself.

Best regards from the middle of the world

We stayed at the Hacienda Manteles as part of a group tour. The setting is magnificent, but somewhat out of the way. The rooms in the main house are huge and tastefully furnished with antiques. However, ours was in the newer section below and we found the rooms to be small. Our room could hardly accomodate the two twin beds once we opened up our suitcases and placed them at the foot of the bed. The bathroom needs updating, the bath lighting consisted of a light bulb without anything around it. They are building an addition with 4 suites. Perhaps they should concentrate on improvements to what they have instead of expansion. Those that stayed in the main house did mention that there were no outlets in the bathroom also which is a shame as these rooms are beautiful. The food served was average. The staff is certainly trying though.

Room Tip: Room one is one of the best, avoid room 8 and 10

We stayed at the Hacienda Manteles as part of a group tour of Ecuator. First of all it was a LONG ride off the road to get to it. (Maybe 45 minutes to an hour along dirt roads.) The place was fairly nice, but not a "hacienda" as I had been to real Haciendas before. The owners and staff were gracious, but the real thing that left a bad taste in our mouths was the check out costs of the drinks we had purchased the night before. One glass of medicore wine was $10! People were complaining about their bills. This place isn't really a great destinaion and they will clip you for the extra charges.

HaciendaManteles, Director of Sales at Hacienda Manteles, responded to this reviewResponded 9 November 2011

Dear Guest,

Please receive the warmest regards from all the people who are part of the Hacienda Manteles´ family.

We would like to thank you for your comments and suggestions since they help us improve our services every day. We really appreciate them.

Hacienda Manteles has been an Ecuadorian Hacienda for more than a century and it used to be part of a bigger Hacienda with a magnificent history. Nowadays we are putting our efforts in protecting more than 200 hectares of cloud forest and paramo and are also growing organic crops such as Quinua, corn and blackberry. It would have been our pleasure to have you visiting the Hacienda for more than just one night in order to share with you all these experiences.

Most people love the location of the Hacienda, since it is surrounded by nature and away of the noisy cities. It is important that our future guests know that the Hacienda is located 45 minutes from the main road. In order to get to the Hacienda there is a drive through paved roads almost all the way, only the last km. is dirth road.

At the Hacienda we serve good chilenean and argentinean wine, we are sorry to know you did not like it that much. We have a wider variety in the bottles and half bottles we offer. For the price you are mentioning we serve a small bottle of wine of 170 cc, which is more than a glass. Unfortunately, in the last 2 years, the price of the wines and other alcoholic products has gone up in Ecuador since a variety of taxes have been applied to this type of products and that has affected us as well. Taxes (12% V.A.T. and 10% service fee - mandatory by law) also have to be added to the prices, the price you are mentioning already include these taxes. Sorry for the inconvinience.

Our goal is to make of your stay at Hacienda Manteles an unforgetable experience and we will continue working hard in order to achieve our goal.

Thank you again for your comments, we apprecaite them very much.

The hotel was charming, the attention perfect, the food was excellent, the surroundings are gorgeous.

Our only mistake was to book 1 night, not two.

The long, winding road of questionable integrity that must be travelled to reach the Hacienda Manteles should not deter a guest from staying at this charming property. From the minute we arrived we felt relaxed and welcome. The gracious host and staff members were very friendly and helpful. The lovely rooms and common areas are tastefully decorated in a traditional rustic and modern fusion style. We particularly enjoyed the comfortable seating area with a fireplace outside our room that allowed us to socialize with new friends we met on our tour. There were varied opinions on the dinner offerings the night we were there, but breakfast was highly received. Our only regret, alas one of which the Hacienda Manteles has no control, was that it was overcast during our entire stay and we knew that we were missing potentially spectacular views of the adjacent volcano. We would have loved to been able to stay longer and explore this very interesting region and hope to return for a longer stay in the future.
