Achaval Ferrer was the first bodega we went to, and we could not have picked a better first stop. Cecilia was an excellent guide, giving us a good introduction to Malbec and wine tasting, and then showing us around the winery. She was very fun, and we enjoyed our tour very much. Of the three wineries we visited, these were the wines I enjoyed the most.

One of the premier wine maker of Argentina, Achaval-Ferrer in one of the Mendoza bodega to put Argentina on the world wine map. It is one of the winery responsible to elevate Malbec to the superstar status it has enjoyed today. You need to book ahead for a visit, there a various languages offered with the tour. We showed up to our appointment and was delighted to find out we are the only two English speakers and our group tour became a private tour! Started with tasting session in a separate tasting room where our guide gave us a brief intro of the history and we dived right in to a flight of five wines, then we proceeded with the facility visit where we were treated to barrel tastes a couple of more wines. My first experience to do so! You are offered the wines for sale at a good price (with discount), you can choose to have it shipped to your home or take them with you. We picked up a couple of bottles as souvenir and to age for later enjoyment. You have a wonderful view of the vineyard and the Andes.

This was one of our destinations on our day's wine tour. We came to Mendoza to learn about Argentinian wines and could not have come to a better place. The tastings were good, but the special one was the red sweet wine. we had not come across anything like this. Unforunately it is only available at the winery and we had no facilities to take some to the UK. Not your average visit but excellent just the same.

You will need reservations in advance of a visit, our tour company uncorking Argentina made ours based on our suggestion to visit. You get five tastings, all were red. As every other place in Mendoza there are few English speaking tours keep this in mind.
You are only doing a tasting there isn't a winery tour which we were find with that because there are many opportunities to have a winery tour. This is a higher end option and higher quality for those who enjoy Malbecs

First off the bat, I think to visit this winery, you should have some basic knowledge about wine, in particular about Malbec, then your visit would be more meaningful, if you are looking to visit a winery with more bells and whistles and just drink a flight of wines, this is probably not the winery for you. Achaval Ferrer consistently produce some of the best Malbec money can buy and majority of the production is for export. Their best single vineyard offerings are from vines Century old. They cut off 90% of the grapes from these vines one month before harvest to concentrate the best clusters so the production is very limited. At the winery, the hard to get bottles are at a modest discount, but nevertheless, you do get savings. Serious wine buffs, your chance to get some cellar worthy stuff. I made a reservation via email, hired a driver to take us there, was greeted by an experienced guide. I have been to enough wineries, the production sides does not interest me much, however, if you want to be impressed, Bodega Salentein or Cantena Zapata may be a better fit. We were introduced to a flight of five wines, then took a short tour and barrel tasted a couple more, picked up a few bottles and went our merry way. They offer shipping to US, big drinkers need not worry. Salud!
