When you have been growing wine since the 1600's you must know a bit about it!
To only make red wine is a gutsy call but the wines are magnificent.
The ambiance of this venue is stunning and could have stayed for hours.
You must go here when in Stellenbosch.

We were with a local couple who knew of this wonderful place on a terrific wine estate. Beautiful garden entry led to a warm and comfortable dining room with tables set for a quiet environment. We had the six course meal with wine pairings. For an American used to being run through a meal quickly so that a table can be turned this was quite a pleasure, as the entire evening was leisurely, allowing for plenty of time for conversation and enjoyment of the food and wines. The dishes were sized perfectly, as were the pourings, so that at the end of the evening we were full, but not overly so. I'm told that prices are high by South African standards, but by mine it was about 2/3 of what I would have paid at home. Not a place to be in a hurry, but why would you want to hurry a nice meal? On a personal note I want to thank Chef Fabio Daniel for going out of his way to arrange minor substitutions in my wife's dishes to accommodate some allergies. He even wrote out a recipe for a yeast-free roll and presented it to her at the end of the evening!

What can I say? This place is special! And it starts with the staff! We were met outside in the cold by a lovely young lady who guided us in and that was just the start. We were served by James and Basil who made us feel like royalty. One of our servers ask my wife if this was her first trip, she told him no, it was her 7th, he replied "Well, welcome home". It brought tears to her eyes! The food brought joy to our tummies. My wife ordered "Popcorn & a Movie" for dessert, it came with an edible ticket! I will forever contrast this night with the time we ate at Overture where we were treated like we were lucky to be allowed to eat there, total arrogance from everyone we met. If you want a VERY special meal, this is the place!

The food is just fabulous: variety, quality, presentation, creativity. We had the 6 course degustation menu, with the wine pairing. A canapé, amuse bouche, sorbet palate cleanser after the main course and some sweets post-dessert also arrived. Wonderful setting. But, 2 issues. First, expect to spend 4 hours there. It was a leisurely meal that quickly changed to plain slow. While service was not intrusive, it was less than attentive at times. It seems that the kitchen had its pace and that was that. And the serving staff seemed to hover by the kitchen at the far end of the room. We have been to many restaurants such as this which are leisurely, but Rust en Vrede is in a class by itself. Second, the wine choices were OK, not great. Just OK. The sommelier was not particularly knowledgeable. A restaurant such as this, on a wine estate, needs someone better. So, be sure to visit, but get ready for several long, quiet interludes, with empty glasses, between courses.
