From the moment we passed through the security gates at the entrance and were greeted with the views of the vineyards and beautiful flowers gracing the road up to the hotel I knew this hotel was wonderful.

My Girlfriend and I stayed here March 21st - 23rd, we arrived and were greeted by security and various porters at the car park. They were very humerus and all had smiles on the faces. They immediately took our luggage out of our car and showed us to reception.

The courtyard is simply stunning, everything is clean and well maintained. The gardens are perfect with nothing out of place. We ventured into reception and were greeted by Stacey. Stacey was brilliant, she could not do enough for us and continually made us at ease throughout check in. She was polite and friendly and very talkative.

We were shown to our room nearby by a porter. This was incredible. Ultimate 5 star! From the bed to the bathroom to the patio leading out to the grassed area near to the pool. The view spectacular looking at the mountains in the distance. The room was huge along with the bathroom. The turndown service excellent they never once disturbed us and such a slick operation. Everything was done in a blink of an eye by some very good communication from staff at breakfast to reception to the cleaners of the room.

We quickly went to do the complimentary wine tasting which was great. Staff very knowledgable.

A special mention to Mueller at reception who throughout our stay was exceptional, he recommended a restaurant nearby and even rung and booked it for us. Due to it being a bank holiday it was one of the few open but he really went that extra mile to ensure we had a reservation. He contacted us a taxi driver who we used on both nights and the whole process was faultless.

Andre at breakfast was a real gent, he welcomed us and continually checked if we were enjoying and the food was to our satisfaction. It was my Girlfriends birthday on our departure day and he brought over a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate.

All staff at the hotel are brilliant, everyone is happy to go out of their way to help you and are a credit to the hotel. Our only regret is we didn't stay longer. We hope to stay again in the future.

This is one of the most stunning places to stay! The views, rooms, the bar, restaurants etc is all amazing! So relaxing and peaceful,
BUT the wine tasting experience was shockingly disappointing.
They have a room where you do the wine tasting which looks into the barrels of wine, they provide you with a menu of wines and you select which ones and thats your experience! There is a lady that accompanies you to answer any questions you may have.
Selecting wines from a menu and sipping on them can be done at a restaurant!
I have been to vineyards in stellenbocsh where they select different wines for you, explain the process of production, accompany it with cheese or chocolates, which all adds to the experience.
For how amazing this place it, if you are going for the wine experience then this is not the place. If you are going for views and relaxation, then this is the best place.
I was disappointed with the experience considering the wine experience is why we went there in the first place.

Dear nar20,
Many thanks for the review and lovely comments - one of the most stunning places to stay indeed!
We're sorry that you found the wine tasting experience a bit of a let down, but for us the tasting should, as ours does, focus on showcasing our wines by offering 3, or 5, or more, to taste, compare and discuss - with an expert on hand to answer questions (not something you can do at a restaurant). We do note your response and are sorry that you found the experience disappointing.
Thank-you again for the review and for the visit, we hope you will return for another stay - and more of all the things you liked about Asara - when you are in SA again.
Kind regards,
Asara Hotel Management

Stunning views of the dam and mountains accompanied by stunning food. Service was great and I'll definitely be back for more. Wide variety of cocktails and drinks. Wine tastings were quite busy , but nothing out of the ordinary as it was Easter.

This was the second time we had made a day visit to Asara. The location is absolutely spectacular and somewhere we will return to every time we visit the Western Cape.

We experienced and afternoon wine tasting, then spend the evening at the restaurant drinking fine wine, eating, and admiring the spectacular views. What was planned as a stop of an hour or so ended up being a wonderful evening that ended at 11pm.

The beauty of Asara cannot be over stated.

Dear RichardHowes,
Many thanks for the review and kind remarks. The beauty and fantastic views are essential aspects of what makes Asara special, and it's great to hear that you enjoyed them so much.
Thank-you, we hope you'll be back for another visit soon. Winter at Asara is a different kind of beauty, but spectacular too in its own way.
Kind regards,

The Asara is a fabulous venue in a beautiful setting. We recently stayed for three weeks on our honeymoon, using it as our base in the Western Cape. Our complaint is not about our overall stay at the hotel - but about what happened at the end of our trip and since we have returned home.

This was the third time we have stayed at Asara, so we knew what to expect from them. We stayed in the Avalon suite, and the hotel had given us a good price because we were staying for such a relatively lengthy period. We had no issue with anything at the hotel - and would otherwise have given a really good review - until it came to our last night!

On the morning of our penultimate day, a 'water geyser' (the pump, we think) burst in the ceiling of one of the rooms in the suite, and started to leak down into the room from the ceiling. Plaster in the ceiling subsequently cracked and water poured in. We moved the small amount of our property in there into an adjacent room, and the hotel got their maintenance staff to look at the problem. While we were out during the day, I received a couple of calls from the hotel indicating that the water to the suite had to be completely shut off and that repairs would take more than one day to complete. The hotel was full and consequently, we needed to leave the hotel and get somewhere else to stay. The hotel were helpful in finding us somewhere else in the area at short notice. So far, so good.

We got back to Asara and had to pack up our belongings at extremely short notice and move out of the hotel quickly. We were under some time pressure as we had been due to meet friends from the UK in Franschoek that evening. Because of our having to unexpectedly pack up and change hotels, this subsequently never happened!

We were refunded the cost of the night we were no longer able to stay at Asara. However, while the new venue was nice it was not in the same league as Asara (the staff there were fantastic and extremely helpful to us!!). We ended up in a small and very dark room, the cost of which was borne by us.

Because of the disruption caused by the plumbing in our suite (and not through anything we had done), our holiday ended up with us having to pack up in a rush, move out of our hotel for our final night and miss out on meeting with our friends. Asara did provide us with a bottle of champagne at the new hotel, which we didn't drink as we already had two others accumulated during our stay (we gave all three to the staff at the new hotel in appreciation for their kindness).

While Asara staff were very helpful in finding us somewhere at short notice, we were surprised that they did not appear to have reciprocal arrangements with similar standard hotels in the area, of which there are quite a few! We were also surprised that the cost of the new venue was not borne by Asara because of the inconvenience and disruption we were put to because of the defective plumbing. We appreciate that such things can happen, but the manner in which they are 'recovered' is what marks a place out as having high quality customer service.

However, things carry on getting worse! Having returned to the UK and emailed the General Manager - a Mr Gottgens - about our experience - twice - (three weeks ago and last week) at the email address provided to us by Asara staff, our biggest disappointment is that he has not bothered to respond at all. We have not received any 'Delivery Failure' receipt from either email, so can only assume that they both got through.

Such unresponsiveness and poor leadership doesn't generate much confidence in the standards of customer-care practised buy the senior management of Asara, and sets a poor tone and example for staff. Although we have been regular visitors over the past four years, we certainly will not be returning any time soon! The manner in which the hotel have dealt with this, both at the time and since our return to the UK, has sadly soured our overall honeymoon experience in South Africa.

Dear Liam M,
We are sorry that the problem at the end of your honeymoon stay marred what was otherwise an enjoyable stay with us.
While there is unfortunately the odd unexpected maintenance malfunction at the hotel from time to time, it is extremely rare that we are forced to move guests to another hotel. Regrettably there was no other option in your case but to relocate you as the problem could not be solved overnight and we were fully booked.
We are sorry to hear that you were not entirely happy with the alternative accommodation, but must point out that it was at a highly-regarded 5-star hotel in the area, which we think was a reasonable alternative, especially at such short notice in peak season.
We take note of your feelings about payment for that night’s accommodation, but please bear in mind that on booking we had already extended a significant discount on your accommodation rate. We believe that our policy and decision in this regard is fair and reasonable.
Please accept our apologies for Mr Gottgens not being in contact as yet. He has been travelling extensively for business reasons and regrettably was not at the hotel, nor in the country during March. He also does not have an assistant to check his emails. He returned to Asara just this morning so please do allow him a day or two to catch up with his inbox. He will get back to you shortly.
Thank-you for the patronage, and our apologies once again. We wish you and your wife all the best for the future.
Kind regards,
Asara Hotel Management
