Derwent House Boutique Hotel
Ranked #3 of 112 Hotels in Cape Town Central
Certificate of Excellence

Situated in an area with good restaurants and bars within easy, and safe, walking distance, this stylish boutique hotel offers excellent, friendly service. The owners visit the premises each day and the charming manager ensures high standards are maintained at all times and that a relaxed atmosphere prevails. Breakfasts are a treat (try the speciality starter from the fridge). Although cabs are inexpensive we walked several times into the city centre and to the Green market. It was good to relax in the pool area on our return. Brenda. Stockport. Cheshire

I spent three nights at the Derwent before making the mistake of moving to the Southern Sun Waterfront to be closer to a conference I was attending. Nothing wrong with the Southern Sun except for their ridiculously high Internet fees, but it was a large, impersonal convention-oriented hotel, whereas the Derwent was warm and personal. The owners were there every day and took a personal interest in your comfort and enjoyment. My room was modern and functional, with free WiFi. Breakfast items could be cooked to order, and there was an honor bar in the public dining area. There was also a lounge that was well-stocked with books and magazines. It's about a 10 minute walk to a nearby shopping area (downhill there, uphill back) that has a full range of shops and restaurants with almost anything that one would reasonably need, including a 2-screen cinema. If you don't mind walking, you can get to the central area of Cape Town in about 30 minutes. For everyone else, it's a taxi or a rental car. Parking is free, too.

There are few hotels or guest houses I can say that mature over time like a good wine, but Derwent House is one of them.
My last stay in 2006, not long after the guest house had opened; was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had and getting the opportunity to re-visit was great and I was not disappointed!!
On arrival the house looked just as good as it did 4 years ago, with its elegant facade and manicured garden.
Walking into the house was like returning to a friends house and I was greeted by name by the staff who were there on my original visit. The decor and ambiance of the house was amazing, you instantly felt relaxed, calm and in amidst luxury.
The same can be said for the rooms too, still very appealing with their clean lines and European feel and stunning views of Table Mountain.
Relaxing by the pool with a great wine from the well stocked honestly bar was decadence at its up most.
The staffs' attentive knowledge of the restaurants and places to visit was second to none, with personal advice each morning and evening ensuring that whatever you felt like doing or not doing was catered for.
Derwent's turn down service ensures that when you arrive back to the house and your room in the late evening, you are greeted with a friendly face from the night staff and a room that has been prepared so you can just slip into bed of one of the most comfortable nights sleep you can have, once you have eaten the monogrammed chocolate off your pillow, read the thought for the day and over view of the coming day's weather.

Travelling alone can sometimes be very difficult especially when staying in hotels, but Derwent House has given me a sanctuary I will return to again and again.

If you want to stay where no one cares or talks to you then don't stay at the Derwent. The Derwent is like staying with your best mates. All your needs are catered for in such a friendly way rather than thinking someone is trying to sting you. Breakfast - quality, Information on things to do and where to eat - better than excellent. I tried for 5 days to find a fault but failed. Only met Jo and she was so lovely, and Chris really professional.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you! ... more   less
