We took a train ride from JHB to Durban and what a great experience! Loved every second of it and can't wait to do another trip! Great value and a great trip!

After reading VERY mixed reviews, I am very glad my boyfriend and I caught the train from Jo'burg to Cape Town. After a very fast paced 2 weeks, it was the perfect way to unwind and see the country side. The entire train was very clean (including the bathrooms), and the service fantastic. The alcohol is very cheap, and you can also BYO wine for your meals (with a corkage charge though). Whilst you are at dinner your cabin is transformed into 2 single beds, with very clean and soft linen, pillows, duvet. We were 2 hours late into Cape Town due to a storm, but they constantly kept us updated on the progress of this. On arrival at the office at Jo'burg station, there is complimentary food, wine and cheeses - a great way to start your travel! If you do not want to pay for bottled water whilst on the train, I suggest bringing plenty of water onboard with you.

Firstly, this train is comfortable and safe. Park station is also very well policed (don't go walking about outside though). Travelling on the train was rather as one would imagine travel in the 1950s/60s. The drawbacks are that the food reminded me rather of school dinners and there was no choice of what you had, The service was also indifferent - requesting drinks outside the short allotted time seemed to put the staff out considerable and I was refused drinks at the bar because the barman said he was tired the first evening (at 9.30) and then 'too busy' when we were still over an hour away from Cape Town. The train was also 5 hours late - which is apparently fairly common. This is a trip certainly worth taking and a unique experience - but it could be considerably improved by better staff and better food.

I had the priviledge of going on this train 31 december with my family. After reading some of the reviews I prepared myself for disappointment...well ,how wrong can one be!
This truly was a magnificent journey.
The cabins were comfortable, spacious (for a train...) ,and suitably appointed.
The food was terrific, no complaints whatsoever....seriously,this is not the blue train...and you certainly aren't paying the price of the blue train (or orient express for that matter) so not sure what other reviewers were expecting???
% course dinner, three course lunch, generous breakfast,as well as snacks upon departure...not bad for R2200 per adult and R1100 per child...not bad at all!!!
Plus add to that the most magnificent scenery imaginable, and you have a truly unique experience.
Life is so fast these days..what better to do then switch off your cell phone, lie back in your cool cabin, relax, read, and et someone else do the driving.
My only regret was that I flew back to Cape town as opposed to doing the return leg on the train!
Some concerns: The aircon in the dining cars sucks..plain and simple..surely this cannot be hard to fix??Mercifully it worked like a charm int he cabins
-When you arrive at park rd station in Jhb,it's kinda fend for yourself and hope for the best..not ideal if you have lots of luggage.

This is 30 year old rolling stock that has been given a facelift..Given the circumstances the staff make an amazing trip of it...I loved every minute of it,and highly recommend you do this trip...just mange your expectations accordingly, and go with the flow, and most of all..relax and enjoy the clickety clack....
