Jatinga Country Lodge
Ranked #8 of 9 Hotels in White River
Reviewed 4 August 2012

Once you find it, Jatinga Country Lodge is an absolute delight. A colonial legacy, it certainly evoked in those days (not that I can remember!) With its sofas on the veranda and staff ready and willing to meet your every need, especially when I needed a charging lead for my camera batteries and they cobbled one together for me. Perhaps the staff were a little bit too willing, verging on obsequious, although my first experience of South Africa, that seemed to be a common tendency.

My room, one half of a stand alone Lodge (all the rooms are stand-alone, scattered throughout the grounds with none more than 100 m from the main building), was delightful. Simply, but elegantly, furnished with good quality linens and toiletries. The bathroom had both a bath (with integral shower) and a separate corner shower, although Eric (the owner) might like to think whether the cobbled floor in the shower is as good as for feet as it is pretty. There was also an outside shower for when it was hotter than during my stay.

The grounds are magnificent, essentially a mini-arboretum with many of the trees labelled and named. Even in the depths of winter (Ha, Ha, Ha, - us Brits know about winters and South Africa certainly does not have one!) there was interest with the odd tree in flower and a few relatively exotic plants in bloom. The deck overlooking the river, actually a large stream tumbling through boulders, was a great place for afternoon tea. So pretty is the garden that while I was there two different wedding groups turned just to take the photos in the garden, apparently a common occurrence!

Top all this with a three course breakfast of yoghurt, granola, honey, fresh fruit followed by cold meats and cheeses then an English selection all with toast and croissant and muffins, and you are set up for the day. Dinner was good, albeit from a choice of only two offerings per course. (In my two weeks in South Africa I ate in a range of places at a wide variety of price points and although I never ate a poor meal equally I did not we eat anything approaching gourmet status.)
Thank you Eric for a great and relaxing stay.

Tip-set your satnav out for Jatinga Village not Jatinga Road, the Lodge is about a kilometre down the dirt track from the sign for Jatinga on the R538

We chose Jatinga as a Wedding Venue for our recent Wedding which took place on the 2nd June 2012. We could not have chosen a better venue and could not have asked for it to go any better.

The venue itself is exquisite, the gardens are beautiful, the Chapel is breath taking and the accommodation is just perfect. We had 24 of our guests join us at Jatinga and all raved about the size and content of their room.

We booked out Jatinga from the friday right the way through until the Sunday. We hosted a Friday night buffet style dinner for some of our guests who had travelled far and it was perfect. The food is of a very high standard and is presented brilliantly. Jatinga served a wonderful continental and hot breakfast on the Saturday and then came the Wedding. There was always a member of staff around to help but they some how managed to just stay on the out skirts of everything. The food was fantastic and was raved about. Wine glasses were always full, the bar fully stocked and always man'ed. The night went perfectly.

The staff are out of this world. Nothing is an issue for them, they constantly have a smile on their face and are more than happy to help with anything and everything. Its very rare to find a hotel now days where right from top management to the gardeners and house keepers, you feel welcome.

So to sum up: Our day could not have gone any better and we owe it all to Jatinga and its amazing staff. THANK YOU!!

We stayed two night at this beautiful and well maintained hotel. Rooms are large with a nice balcony overlooking the beautiful hotel gardens. Breakfast was very good and complete although the service is low... The food is good. They need to improve the cleaning of the bathroom that was full of mold spots....

We recently stayed at Jatinga, and founfd the place to be an absolute gem! The rooms were spacious, clean, well fitted out. The food was very well presented and delicious. The manager, Mike, went out of his way to make this a special stay for us. The only thing is that the hotel is rather quiet, both good and bad. It is a pity that more people dont frequent Jatinga. Well worth the trip!

The wife and I celebrated our 20th anniversary in Room 7 at Jatinga and I would recommend it for a secluded, very quiet and romantic get away. The rooms are well appointed, large and airy with a lovely verandah overlooking the enormous established and well maintained garden. TV is adequate (but who wants to watch TV in such a great setting?). The large bathroom and the outdoor shower is really special! Linen and towels were of a good quality and the bed offered a good sleep, although someone with a back problem might find it a bit hard.

Jatinga is close to Nelspruit and White River, as well as a stone throw away from the Kruger National Park and the Kruger International Airport. It would make sense for a foreign tourist to make use of the lodge as a stop-over, but as a South African I believe management should rather focus on marketing it as a romantic destination - which it really is. It is evident that the dip in tourism internationally is also having an effect on this establishment, as with the exception of the garden, everything seems a little run down and in need of maintenance. The route to Jatinga is not well signposted ( I could not even find it on my GPS) and had to phone the lodge for directions. The 1 - 2 km dirt road to get there is not the greatest, but can be driven by a small car then also, the fact that it is a bit off the beaten track adds to the romantic setting.

Management went to a lot of trouble and made our candlelight dinner in the wine cellar very special. The food however was a bit of a let-down - somewhat tasteless and overcooked, and expensive! Breakfast on the other hand was better than the norm with cheeses, fruit and cold meats served on a stylish 3 tier tray, home-made muesli and a good hot breakfast.

Although reception is understaffed, management was aware of our coming and going and we were welcomed the moment our car stopped at the front door. I need to compliment the lodge on the excellent, professional and friendly F&B junior staff / waiters - their service and the beautiful colonial setting made up for what was lacking in quality of food.

Summary: I will stay again. A bit of a run-down feeling to the buildings and furniture. Good location. Romantic setting and stunning garden. Food not the best.
