A week at Zulu Nyala exceeded our expectations!! We stayed in the Hemingway Tents and were VERY comfortable. We avoided the traditional hotel experience and were able to really relax and get away from our fast paced life at home. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The drives (twice a day) were AMAZING! We say Giraffes, Rhinos, Hippos, Zebra, Baboons, Monkeys, Nyala, Buffalo, Elephants, Kudu, Impala, Wildabeast, Wart Hogs, Cheetah etc., etc. Our guide, Louise, was incredible! She was very experienced and pointed out even the smallest things we would have missed. Every drive was a new and different experience. We only took 2 other excursions because the drives were so fabulous. This is a life-changing experience.

Room tip: The Hemingway Tents on west edge give a fabulous view and amazing sunsets!

While planning this trip to South Africa after winning a bid at a gala, we got anxious reading earlier reviews. Folks unhappy with the animal diversity or menus.
However, we loved exploring this game ranch with our wonderfully talented Ranger Richard who had many years of experience in finding and getting close to game and who was very entertained when the animals were being themselves.
The excursions let us see a wider variety of habitats and animals in herds. We loved the Tembe Elephant Park-the Hluwowe-Imfalozi Park and the boat ride at St Lucia.
The accommodations were spacious with all modern conveniences and the landscaping was absolutely remarkable. Staff was always helpful.
The only difficulty we experienced was working with the front desk folks. They got our shuttle return time wrong and I spent months trying to get confirmations from them.

We did not realize that almost all the folks at Zulu Nyala were there because they had won a local charity auction. That is how the reserve markets itself. What a great idea, splitting the fee with the charity. This was our first safari.

It is not the most comprehensive reserve, but offers a good experience. While the Hemingway Tents are nice, beware windy nights. However, the impalas and zebras are right outside. After 3 nights in the flappathon of the tent, we upgraded to the new Heritage Lodge rooms which are spacious, luxurious and comfortable.

Our ranger, Bernie, was super, knowledgeable, professional and most accommodating. Our only criticism was the lunch and dinner food was well below our expectations. The entire staff was helpful and gracious. We recommend taking the side visits to Hluhuwe and St Lucia. Be prepared for a need for extensive tipping, but the tipping is below US standards.

Who needs more than 66 giraffes, 5 or so rhinos, a bunch of monkeys and loads of hippopotamuses? With a cheetah or maybe two, three female elephants (each eat 150 kg/day of trees and bushes!!) and whole lots of kudus and nyalas (go Wiki them!) and not a huge tourist crowd, what could be nicer?

We had very low expectations going in and we should not have! We stayed in one of the newly constructed rooms at the Heritage Safari Lodge. It was beautiful. Our guide, Musa, was OUTSTANDING. He made each drive a little different, was extremely knowledgeable and made accommodations for each of us. The food was good for buffet style, but after 4 days we were looking for other offerings. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay.
