It's a large building with an airy warehouse type feel. Contemporary and modern. Two of us shared 8 savoury dishes and 3 dessert plates. I would particularly recommend the teriyaki sweet potato with goat yoghurt, and the pork belly with butternut puree and tamarind dip. The desserts were excellent, especially the butternut semi freddo with pancetta honeycomb. With 4 drinks, we paid R900. The service was spot on too.

Had a fab Monday evening dinner here with family and friends - it was quiet but that worked really well as I can imagine it would be a bit hectic and impersonal on a fri/sat night. The tapas dishes were interesting and well thought-out with great flavours and the service was fabulous - attentive but not too much so. The dessert was possibly the nicest one I’ve ever tasted (I very nearly didn’t have one but v glad I did!!) and the dessert wine was absolute heaven.... Definitely recommend.

Urbanologi is located in the Mad Giant brewery in New Town, Centre of Jozi.
It's a large, modern space located next to all the brewing tanks. Seating offers some less comfy bench type tables and some more typical restaurant-style tables and chairs.
When we walked in a DJ and muso was belting out some latin tunes that became more electronic later in the evening. It was quite loud so you do need to yell a bit until you get used to it.
We ordered some drinks, well tried to but they had run out or didn't keep stock of some typical items. We eventually ordered some margaritas, which were good but were a bit light on tequila (we doubled up on the second round) and some Waterkloof wines.
All the wine is from Waterkloof winery as there is a common ownership, so we were told.
The menu is compact and tapas orientated with choices in raw, cured, steamed, fried and coal-fired categories.
We ordered an assortment: duck pancakes, cured beetroot, steamed brioche in chicken fat, pork dumplings, fried calamari and pork belly amongst others.
The food arrived in pairs and was nicely cooked (if it said crisp it was), light dumpling pastry but it was all a bit bland and under-seasoned. The pancakes were the standout dish and had good flavour.
Everything else just lacked balance or any wow. Tapas, particularly modern tapas should have big flavours and this just didn't. The tamarind sauce for the pork was incredibly sour and the lemon puree with the squid mad your teeth zing.
The food could really be great if they can sort the flavours and balance out.
Service was a bit inattentive, the staff were just a bit too busy so a little waving was required.
Urbanologi is half trendy nightspot half restaurant, I'm just not sure what it is better at.

A midweek visit for a business dinner, which made for an exciting change into what is the oldest part of Johannesburg CBD. Now the modernized Mad Giant brewery, ordering all varieties of their beer is a must do, also recommended are their cocktails! The entire menu was ordered with a sharing feast commencing. Hero’s were the tender melt-in-your-mouth chicken dishes, the herb seared venison, and sublime dumplings. Service was warm and knowledgeable though slow, especially for a quiet eve. Interesting eye-catching bathroom decor too. Next visit will be on a weekend to enjoy the last of summer listening to live music and enjoying some downtown street culture. Secure parking available.

Front office/reception do not tolerate requests for seating changes although there is no booking. Wines very expensive for the unknown. The menu contains many high fat content selections - new menu. We chose the known which was average/ expected a lot with the reviews read. A group arrived and very quickly went to the market next door for a wholesome selection.
