WE TRAVELLED IN OCTOBER 2016 BUT HAVE LEFT THE REVIEW FAR TOO LATE FOR TRIP ADVISOR TO HAVE THIS DATE OF TRAVEL AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION!!
Wow! The best place we have ever stayed. You arrive feeling as though you're about to step into Jurassic Park and that excitement continues throughout the stay. Our guide, Daniel, picked us up from the reception area (where you leave your car and so if you can, pack a separate smaller case for your stay as we had our large cases which had to be hauled up on to the large safari truck) and stayed with us throughout our trip, taking all our tours and dropping us back at the end. We only stayed for 2 nights but would return for longer next time.
The rooms are incredible. Floor to ceiling windows, a log burner which was lit for us each night, snacks and drinks, a plunge pool (ice-cold!) and the most wonderful views. They are more like cottages than rooms as they are so large and well equipped. We stayed at the bush lodge but also visited the lake lodge and there are advantages to both but if I was choosing again I would pick the bush lodge for the accommodation and the fact that you have views of the plains so are more likely to see the animals closer up.
Food was plentiful! We started our safari at around 6:30am and then at around 9:30am had breakfast, returned to our lodge to relax for a while before heading for drinks at the lake lodge (where we spotted the rhino we'd been searching for all morning!), there are a number of options for lunch which runs 1-2pm and then the afternoon safari starts at around 4:30pm and drinks follow immediately with dinner at around 8pm (but it's to suit). In between safaris, you can relax at your lodge, take a trip to the other lodge, have a massage, take part in archery or one of the walks although the spa and walks get booked up very quickly and so book before you go.
As for the safaris and animals we saw almost everything we had hope for (except for the elusive leopard!). Daniel was fantastic at finding the animals and all rangers worked together to ensure we had the best sightings possible. Daniel was very knowledgeable and told us lots of interesting facts about the various animals we saw and he was also an expert ornithologist. From out room we saw lots of warthogs, zebra, monkeys and impala. The reserve, although very large, is relatively small compared to some of the others but it means you get a better chance of seeing more. It's not as commercial as others and has fewer rooms and so fewer trucks which makes it feel more intimate.
An amazing experience and one we are planning on reliving again as it was just so incredible. It isn't inexpensive but provides unforgettable memories. You will be well looked after throughout and will see how wonderfully run this private reserve is.
