...now mainly a quirky cafe venue and a unique setting. Not suitable if you have restricted mobility as the stair up into the building is steep, with a handrail.

Fascinating prison from the early 1800s - but the coffee shop is also a great experience. Light snacks and superb coffee.

A small pub in the old prison. Interesting architecture. When we were there during the Grahamstown festival, artist were performing music in the old court-yard. It was very pleasant to sit there sipping drinks while listening to a musician performing.

The visitor wanting to see the interior of the old Provost military prison no longer needs to make an appointment to visit - all that is required is to stroll in and satisfy your curiosity whilst enjoying a hot coffee! What a good idea it was to use this space as a cafe and what an interesting space it turns out to be. Built in 1838, it was designed by Jeremy Bentham - the plan is called a "panopticon" as from the central hub, it is possible for a warder to see all of the cells as they are constructed round a circle. Yet again, there is no info details on site, so once again it is up to the individual to google the history.
