The entry to this museum was free to the public because of construction. Located in downtown San Jose, this museum is situated at the Plaza de la Democracia. This former army barracks contains historical and archaeological displays. Of greater interest to us was the enchanting "Butterfly House". We spent about an hour there taking photos. We saw more species here than at Selvatura Park near the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve.

After a white knuckle bus ride from the coast we went to the national museum in San Jose. The different size stone sphere that are unexplained were very cool. On the bus ride we stopped and saw a sloth and poison dart frogs in the jungle. Scary bus ride for sure but quite an experience.

We entered via the Butterfly Garden, lots of beautiful butterflies flitting around. Excellent displays of Costa Rica's historical development showing some wonderful ancient artefacts, but needed more time than our tour allowed to fully appreciate and digest the information. The morning we visited, the President was there opening a new section to the museum and after the inaugural ceremony he came over and spoke to me, we obviously stood out as tourists and he was delighted to find we were from England, apparently he loves to visit London. A nice and unexpected event.
