After long online search of likely downtown hotels to have the very best base for several days to experience San Jose, I finally chose HotelPresidente. First, for it's absolutely superior central location, quite nearest the museums, its rooftop deck restaurant bar and that it was directly on the attractive, safe and lively pedestrian promenade, The Peatone, that defines the living heart of this city, and links it all together. A colorful expressionist mural makes the building an outstanding landmark.
On arrival, I was warmly greeted by the staff who maintain a constant presence at the verdant entrance, with it's small parking area. An elevator, or the easy stairs brought me up into a very pleasant and interesting open lobby, repurposed and decorated from a previous commercial space, with Computer stations, a printer and comfortable lobby seating. Coffee and tea service. The front desk was always and every one very pleasant and responsive, in my case, to a misplaced, confirmed reservation. As I was early, they checked my bags into a secure locker, and I went out to the nearby National Museum, then the adjacent Jade and Gold museums, all must see, all within several blocks of the Hotel.
My room on the 7th floor overlooked the promenade through an opening window, that allowed the not roo loud bustle of the city in. (Try Rome or London...) A parade below livened my Sunday morning.
I found luxurious bedding, a variety of pillows, and fluffy towels. Very modern decor. Very clean. Deluxe toiletries, especially, suprisingly, the bar soap. Hairdryer, iron and safe.
A comfy, if firm, mattress. Plenty of hot, forceful water in the shower.
A large stopperd bottle of water (how nice) and glasses was provided, that went straight into the included refrigerator.
The a/c worked very well.
After a full day of museums, and promenading the busy, commercially dense peatone, with vendors, loud lottery hawkers and authentic artisans pedaling their own creative and worthy souvenirs, I ventured to the beautiful terrace rooftop for dinner. A very nice, and interesting selection at very reasonable (hotel)prices, created with love and craft by Chef Roxanne, and served by an attentive and lively staff. (Randall,
Adrianne(?, apology) The intimate outside area Lushly landscaped screening the lit cathedral spires of the nighttime cityscape beyond.
The lovely, friendly room maid greeted me everytime and inquired to my comfort. As is my want, i explored other rooms, and room 801 is their only suite with a sunny, southward balcony ! Rooms -22, -23 and -24 have wonderful east and/or west exposure that stream morning sun, and provide glorious in room sunsets over the city, when availiable., and are quieter.
The breakfast buffet..Impressive. Complete, well prepared with great quality and variety, with culturally relevant murals and historic relief panels that adorn the spacious room. A made to order egg station. Excellent CR coffee, fresh squeezed right there CR OJ..well, the pinnacle of my experience there.. and the ever pleasant and attentive staff. Thank you EVERY ONE.This superior buffet Really adds significant VALUE to this hotel.
Sincerely hope the management appreciates fully the quality of the entire staff here. Other hotels should take note.
The pedestrian promenade densely packed with all types and variety(bookstores!) of shopping experiences, will satisfy the Serious Shopper, and all scales of dining. Try the Patio directly across. Two blocks east, and a half block south, find an entirely unique CacaoUtopia - CasaCocoa, in the made from bean to table chocolate factory/museum/cosy cafe,
owner/operated by Belgian Master Choclatier Cedric and his lively staff in his small laboratory. Produce your own chocolate in the hands on workshop he offers. Great for the kids and all cacao lovers..who is not?
HotelPresidente
My forever place in Chepe.
I'll be back.
*The lively Peatone, is safely peopled and open till not too late into the evening, with several casinos for those who must, not densely populated by the usual suspects here, with a regular police presence.
Do not venture down the side streets.

Warm welcome by friendly staff and nicely decorated lobby.
The superior king bed room is very large, with a separate sitting area. But it definitely lacks of decoration and furniture. Anyway comfortable and clean.
Can be noisy in the street, windows are not much soundproof. But being on the penultimate floor helps and it was all in all not too disturbing.
Nice buffet breakfast with eggs made to order, however lacks of sweet choice, apart from bread, jam and pancakes. Some cake or pastries should be welcome.
Efficient wifi.

We stayed here overnight having flown in from the UK and before driving down to the Central Pacific Coast. Great central location just off one of the main streets in San Jose. Hotel is not large and has a quirky contemporary style. Room was comfortable and the roof top bar and restaurant was perfect for some fresh air after a long flight. Staff and service were excellent. Breakfast was excellent.

Location is central to the downtown area, within walking distance to several museums, and loads of stores and shops.

The room was impeccably clean. The staff were professional and pleasant. The breakfasts were hearty, and included a large variety of options. The restaurant on the top floor had a small but interesting menu.

Would definitely return...

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Presidente for my second visit.
The location is perfectly situated right near to the main pedestrian street with restaurants and shopping. It is also very close to a beautiful park and the museums are within walking distance. As you enter the lobby you are greeted with very unique art pieces as well as items that have historical meaning to this family owned hotel and it's history. The lobby has a welcoming feel that makes you want to sit and relax awhile. There is wonderful roof top patio surrounded by plants and flowers which is great for enjoying one of their deliciously curated cocktails after a long day. The patio is just outside the restaurant that offers outstanding ceviches, traditional Costa Rican dishes, as well as many other items. The prices are very reasonable as well. It is a very popular restaurant so make sure you make reservations ahead of your arrival. Do not miss eating here! Everything I tried was outstanding. That brings me to the complimentary breakfast which is also delicious, with everything from fresh fruits, to an omelette station cooked to order, along with the best Pinto Gallo I've ever eaten.
Actually, I would stay again at Presidente for the food alone! The spotlessly clean rooms are all very large with comfortable beds. I slept great, as the hotel was very quiet both times I stayed, yet full of travelers. The staff was professional, friendly and helpful. I truly can not think of one negative. It is perfect for staying a night or 2 before or after venturing on to other locations in Costa Rica. I highly recommend Hotel Presidente. Side Note: Ask the staff about the interesting family history of this hotel.
