Review of Hacienda El Estribo - CLOSED

Hacienda El Estribo
Cuisines: American
Description: Hacienda El Estribo is located on the old road that runs between Santa Ana and Escazu towns in Costa Rica. These 2 towns have a lot of expats and/or tourists that stay when they have to stay in San Jose area. The bar is run by an American and offers a range of local/import beer, food covers the gamut of American bar fare - hamburgers, wings, quesidillas, nachos, fish & chips, but also has some local Costa Rican flare. The sports bar has multiple plasma TVs and all sports - hockey, basketball, UFC etc are played daily. There is an adjoining restaurant that is more family-oriented.

When we first got here, we thought, wow this place is big! There were not many people there at first but later more came bc there was a MMA fight on TV. We found our own table and were greeted with menus. My husband and I started out with a beer and a glass of wine. (at first the waiter said they didn't have red wine, but he came back with a bottle a little while later, awesome!) We ordered the Ceviche to start, YUM! It was served with tortilla chips, which is our favorite.
I ordered the chicken sandwich with veggies (someone posted here they were really good, i'd say pass the veggies and just go with fries) my husband got the steak fajitas. Both were great choices! We had a great time here! will def be back! they have ping pong and some other games that looked like a lot of fun if you were with a group of people.

My husband and I went to eat here last week. The food was AMAZING, and exceeded our expectations. How good was it? Well, for starters I don't like vegetables very much. I appreciate the color they add to my plate, and take a kind of obligatory bite of them because I know I should. But this time, I actually ate every bite of the vegetables on my plate! They had a kick to them, and were awesome. Had no idea veggies could taste so good. Aside from that, the entre was outstanding. I had the mango poached pork, and it was delicious. We also had the mocha cheescake for desert. My husband isn't a huge cheesecake person, but it was recommended so we went with it. It was off the charts good. Honestly think it was the best I've ever had. It didn't have the consistency of most cheesecakes. It was just like heaven! They played great music while we were there, and have a live music at times as well - I believe on weekend nights. The waitress was good, and the chef was friendly and attentive. He seems like a person who is genuinely passionate about what he does, and it comes out in the food. I would definitely visit again. Also, Hacienda has a really cool view of the rainforest. We saw some cool animals, and it is well lit at night. It was very nice. The restaurant is a great place for a date, or a night out with a group for dinner and drinks. I'm already missing it!

My husband and I were traveling in Costa Rica and was staying in the Escazu area. We just happened to stumble upon Estribo while looking for a place to eat. Much to my husband's delight, it's a sports bar! There were a bunch of TV screens with different sports on, typical American food menu (burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, etc) and some local fare. We had the pizza which was quite good. Full bar menu with local and imported beer and a pool table. Prices seemed fair for the area (Costa Rica isn't as cheap as some people imagine) There is also a restaurant next door that I think is more for families with children. Met Dave the owner from Texas who was full of info on what to do and where to get what we wanted before we left Costa Rica. He's lived in Costa Rica for years so was very helpful and knowledgeable.
