The food was good. But when we received the bill we couldnt enjoy our visit anymore. For paying with credit card the owner asked for 20% of a bank commission fee without telling us in advance (additionally to the 10% service fee that is common in CR) . This percentage is much higher than the usually commission fees in costa rica . Honestly we are disappointed about the dinner and can't recommend the restaurant.

That is the 10% service charge and the 13% sales tax the you get charge on every restaurants in Costa Rica and you still pay half of what you will pay on other restaurants so I don’t think this is a rip-off right

This was our second dinner in the Manuel Antonio area (and also in Costa Rica). We decided to try some more local alternatives in Quepos. It was a Sunday night during the low season, so most of the places in Quepos were closed. Velamar was opened and was highly rated in TA, so we decided to give it a try.

The restaurant is located on the second floor of a building - you can probably see the restaurant if you are driving to Manuel Antonio through Quepos. It has about 6 tables, and, on that day, there was the chef, one or two kitchen helpers, and a waiter. It had a mix of tourists and local customers.

I would say this is a soda plus type of restaurant - the menu has most of the usual suspects you would find in Costa Rica, including the ubiquitous casados, ceviches, rice with chicken etc. But the food is very, very good. The fish dishes (seabass was the recommendation of the day) were very fresh and well prepared, among the better ones I had in Costa Rica. Ceviches were also great and the portions were decent.

Not sure how this would compare to other places in Quepos, but we really enjoyed our meal here. The food is good and fresh, portions decent, with very friendly service, and quite inexpensive (will cost more than a local soda, in general, but way less than your resort restaurant or some more upscale options at Marina Pez Vela).

One thing that is curious. The owner always came to apologize for the bill because the waiter was new. The bill was not wrong, it was just taking longer. No problems here.

Goodtimes at Marisqueria Velamar! Good food overlooking the soccer field in town. Friendly service and a pura vida vibe!

Ate here at least 10 times when I stayed down there and every time was awesome! Check out if you want a tico experience w "American gourmet" style grub!

Came here for lunch and shared an excellent tapas of fish and meat dishes all were delicious and very good value for money. We also had some very good fruit cocktail drinks. The staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is very local and relaxed.
I would thoroughly recommend this place for lunch.

We visited as per awesome TA reviews but did not find it to be great value for money in terms of seafood.
Their portions are fairly small, though presentation of the dishes is very nice.
We are not big eaters, and we've been to quite a few of CR restaurants at that point, so I had something to compare to.
Note: in the menu in section "Casados" 3 types of fajitas are listed - they are NOT casados - ie the portion of fajitas is quite small (in case you have a different idea about fajitas).
Fruit drinks are delicious (after you get what you ordered - the waiter initially brought the wrong one)

I would recommend you pay by cash but do check your bill carefully - their billing practice does not seem to be very accurate. Once we pointed out to discrepancy in our bill, the owner apologized and explained it out by the new waiter who's just learning his work - it seems that this excuse is being used routinely as a response to TA comments.

Overall, it is a decent place, but I am not sure why people are raving about it so much.
