This was our second dinner in the Manuel Antonio area (and also in Costa Rica). We decided to try some more local alternatives in Quepos. It was a Sunday night during the low season, so most of the places in Quepos were closed. Velamar was opened and was highly rated in TA, so we decided to give it a try.
The restaurant is located on the second floor of a building - you can probably see the restaurant if you are driving to Manuel Antonio through Quepos. It has about 6 tables, and, on that day, there was the chef, one or two kitchen helpers, and a waiter. It had a mix of tourists and local customers.
I would say this is a soda plus type of restaurant - the menu has most of the usual suspects you would find in Costa Rica, including the ubiquitous casados, ceviches, rice with chicken etc. But the food is very, very good. The fish dishes (seabass was the recommendation of the day) were very fresh and well prepared, among the better ones I had in Costa Rica. Ceviches were also great and the portions were decent.
Not sure how this would compare to other places in Quepos, but we really enjoyed our meal here. The food is good and fresh, portions decent, with very friendly service, and quite inexpensive (will cost more than a local soda, in general, but way less than your resort restaurant or some more upscale options at Marina Pez Vela).
One thing that is curious. The owner always came to apologize for the bill because the waiter was new. The bill was not wrong, it was just taking longer. No problems here.
