We shared a 4 bed room with another duo and payed $13,75 pp - GREAT deal for this place!

Built beautiful on a hill side, eather from your room or from the communal lounge you can see the sea and jungle. Monkeys above us, armadillo while brushing my teeth.

Nice big kitchen you can use for cooking.

100% recommendable

Luna Llena Hotel is a youth hostel... so if you’re looking for a nice private room with a private bathroom, I would recommend you to look elsewhere. We had the room 6 – double room with private bathroom – for which we paid 65 USD per night, a fortune for what it is!

The bathroom was teeny tiny and not particularly clean, and the room itself was more a kind of a cabin than a proper room with, again, a state of cleanliness rather questionable.

The bed was surprisingly short (1m80), so if you’re bigger than that, be prepared to sleep with your feet outside the bed. Very comfortable…

We gave our feedback to the lady manager at the end of our stay (3 nights, as we couldn’t cancel the reservation (very clever)), and she literally smiled at our face.

So, if possible, I really encourage you to have a look at the room before making a reservation - this will spare you a very bad surprise.

Room tip: Avoid the double rooms, they are quite expensive (at least one of them is not worth the price) and they are close to the road.

We stayed one night at Luna Llena. The surroundings were beautiful. There is a great ocean view and the rooms on the upper levels are right at treetop level. We had a private room with a queen bed and a shared bathroom. The room was fan-cooled, which worked out okay. We had options to open the windows and let in the ocean breeze, but were greeted with a massive cicada that surprised us in the night. Our room had quite a few visitors (ants/spiders/beetle etc) but other than that was clean and comfortable enough. Staff were not super friendly but showed us what we needed to get through the night. For Montezuma, it's an adequate place to stay. Not much of a step up from your typical hostel, but it did the job. I'd go back, but with more realistic expectations.

Room tip: "private balcony" is a bit of a stretch, but the higher up rooms are worth it for the view

This is a beautiful place to spend the day and hangout, however, the hostel does leave a bit to be desired. The staff are often quite unhelpful and even rude. They insisted upon doing work with power tools at 8 am twice during my 4 day stay. Overall, though, the hostel met my expectations.

My wife and I have returned to Montezuma 4 times now and for our recent vacation we tried out Luna Llena. There are some who complain that this hotel is a pain because it is NOT located on the flat main drag of the town, it is instead up the road where you have to walk up a steep incline of the road out of town, which takes about 3-4 minutes to the main entrance of Luna Llena. From here, there are about 30 steps up to reception. Our cabin was #8, which was the first one you approach as you climb up, so it was only a few steps to climb; the cabins higher up would differ of course. Our cabin was simple, comfortable and had a great balcony.

Some people complain that it's tiresome to walk up the steep road, but really it is a short walk and worth it. On other trips we stayed at many of the hotels down below in the core of town and we noticed everywhere we stayed had a moldy smell. Whereas being up higher and with all the jungle the moisture of the ocean is much less because our cabin smelled fresh, especially when we'd open the door to our cabin and the balcony doors. We would rather climb up a small hill than smell mold any day.

Speaking of the main road, this cabin is closest to the road so it can get very noisy at times which wasn't a problem during the day, but very hard to get sleep, especially in the early morning. We guessed it wouldn't be any quieter in the other cabins up higher near reception because the sound of the vehicles and 4-wheelers revving up the hill are quite loud. So bring earplugs and you'll be fine.

The shared kitchen was clean, organized and if we labeled a grocery bag with our names we could store a bag or two of groceries in their two communal fridges. We saved a lot of money making our lunches rather than the restaurants. It is best to keep your food in the communal kitchen to keep the ants from being attracted to your room, we did see ants in our cabin (welcome to the jungle!). We had a ritual of waking out of bed, then walking up to the reception area to get a free cup of coffee available in the kitchen and then returning to sip our java on our balcony to the sound of the jungle waking up. Even our large lizard friend (ctenosaur) would wake up, who was living in the ceiling beneath the tin roof panels over the balcony. Don't be alarmed though, they are harmless, just a little noisy at times, but the good thing was the lizard would sleep during the night, so same hours as us.

So we gave this place 4 stars, and I would say only because it was annoyingly loud so close to the road, where as we found it quieter at Luz De Mono which is closer to the ocean down below. All in all we really enjoyed our stay, my complaint was easy to overcome with earplugs, so don't look past this place, read the other reviews and know that we would recommend this place for sure.

Pura Vida

Room tip: Cabin 8 was nice but noisy being so close to the road. Bring earplugs and you'll be fine : )
