Usually when you plan a last minute trip and end up choosing hotels based on what you can pull up discreetly on your phone during a day-long business meeting, you don't expect things to be ideal. So it was pure luck that I booked the Gaia Hotel for the first four days of our November trip to CR. We had decided we needed a trip after a rough year (multiple moves, a family death, and more) and Gaia was a perfect way to start it.
The hotel sits at the top of a lush hill, but no need to climb, there is always friendly staff waiting to whisk you up and down in a golf cart, while you sit back and enjoy the beautiful landscaping on one side of the road and the wild nature preserve on the other. So beautiful. You might be even tempted to walk it. But fair warning, a few times down the hill on foot and your calves may kill you dead the next morning. It's steeper than it looks.
The hotel's restaurant/bar, on the second floor of the main building, is open to the outdoors, with a stunning view of rainforest and ocean - we spent many hours there just soaking up the atmosphere. Both the veg and the omnivore loved the food - it's fresh and beautifully prepared.
The guest rooms are in separate buildings, tucked into the jungle below the main building. Our room was mid-price but you'd never know it - we had a lovely sitting room, a huge bedroom and bath, and best of all, a small terrance with two lounge chairs and the same breath-taking view as the restaurant. More hours spent sitting and soaking it up there.
The staff was wonderful - attentive, warm rather than formal, and never intrusive. (That's a pretty impressive balance.) They treat guests like family - I've never stayed in a hotel where I felt so welcome.
There is something about being at the top of the hill, looking out at the rain forest and ocean, that is just magical. We stayed in other five stars throughout our trip, but this is the one that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling and makes me want to go back.
