My husband and I stayed at Sol y Mar for one night only - and although the host was kind enough to give us a deal and offer us breakfast in the morning, we felt we had intruded on her quiet night and had somehow ripped her off. She even tried to change the price of the room once she had already agreed to our original price and showed us the room.
We were the only guests and were given a private room - which had dirty sheets and a random sock on the floor left over from the last guest were guessing. The bathrooms were very small, dirty and unkept. The water wouldn't turn off after washing your hands and you couldn't sit on the toilet normally as there wasn't enough leg room.
The grounds were unkept and the stairs leading to the entrance/exit were literally falling apart. There were missing sections that a person could easily fall into, or down a few feet that were simply camouflaged with a potted plant, or not at all.
The keys provided by the host did not work on the main gate and we again felt like we had intruded on the host by ringing the doorbell to let us in after our night out. (I too would be annoyed by this, but if the key worked, we wouldn't have had to in the first place.)
There was wifi on the grounds but it did not work in the room - you had to step outside to get any stable connection.
We left promptly the next morning and found another hostel across the street that was much more welcoming.

Wow ! As soon as we arrive in that place we knew by the lady Solangy that we would be at a good place. She cooked delicious french toast with a coffee and she is been so helpful with all our bad previous story (had our backpack stolen with passport) The room was clean and really good if you want to share as well. The bad comment must be another place they talk about cause this one was by far the best place we've stayed in Costa Rica. For a hostel it's pretty good!

We spent 20 minutes trying to understand the extremely rude woman explaining the pricing of the room. The rooms were tiny, cramped, dirty, and dangerous. The communal room had random, unleashed Rottweilers barking and scaring our young children. Parking was locked, but so hazardous to enter and exit that would be impossible without a guide to assist in parking your car. We did not stay here, left the property, drove 5 minutes to stay at Hostel Pura Vida for less money and more space, with friendly staff.

I looked through previous reviews and I am surprised about high expectations. "Sol y mar backpackers" is a hostel. Period. We paid 35$ per night and had everything we needed: hot shower, comfortable bed and air conditioner. If you want semi-luxury conditions do not stay at hostels at all.
Why I graded this place as "excellent'?
1). It was very reasonable price. Manuel Antonio is a popular place to visit and it is hard to find a place to stay below 70$ per night.
2). As I indicated above we found everything that we needed. I agree that the room was dark. But we came to Costa Rica to explore the beauty of this country, not to stay at hotel.
3). We really liked the natural garden in "Sol y mar". You can observe many endemic animals just on the trees near your room. For example we have seen a sloth. Isn't exiting?
4). The important thing is a safety of this place. This hostel is gated and guarded by dogs. BTW dogs were absolutely nice and friendly to visitors, but had a feeling to dangerous strangers.
5). We enjoyed so much the company of the owner - Solangie. This wonderful person is really friendly and helpful. We used to spent every evening together talking about Costa Rica and life. She pointed to the best places to eat and to walk and she can also go with you to any unique trips, according your wishes.
In the conclusion I would highly recommend this place to young groups of backpackers, people from different countries who travel to meet new wonderful places as well as wonderful people.

half the stuff in the room didn't work -half the lights, half the plumbing. The bathroom smelt bad. I thought there might be towels provided and thought there would definitely be toilet paper -wrong. walked out and left them to it. Great place down the road (Backpackers Manuel Antonio) at half the price.
How did this place get a recommendation at all on this site, which is normally pretty helpful.
I think I might have got confused with Cabinas Sol y Mar Costa Rica which rates 2 instead of this place which on closer look is 17 out of 18. don't be confused.

Room Tip: don't go there
