Very zen place, staff is amazingly kind and helpful, yet give you pleanty of space. All is focuced on relaxation and a nice time, no loud music in the evening which is a plus. In-house restaurant is great reasonably priced, all food is delicious and fresh, all expertly prepaired. Great place for a couple to relax and unwind.

Why? We are definitely coming back and want to make sure there is room...Seriously, my wife and I were sharing our collective 100 year mark and wanted to do something special, I only let my wife know a week prior as to where we were going as I wanted the suspense to build after I booked some months ago. We had only booked a week, next time we will shoot for 12 days. We are coming from the North East and travel time was not at all unbearable given the rewards of the people and the property. We booked a private charter with Camaron Air which worked out great, and gained us an extra 8 hours to enjoy Casa Chameleon. Our Villa was Camibar, it is one of the newer Villas that had a great infinity pool with the water fall and a shower that opened up to the patio, the doors of the Villa opened up as well. It was great to hear the Howler Monkeys, be surrounded by the privacy of the jungle, and have spectacular water views. The grounds we well kept and food was fresh, organic, and consistently amazing. We had breakfast every morning and dinner multiple times. From the Skirt steak to Tuna Tartare, to the spectacular Ribs, everything was well presented and tasted fantastic. Now to the best part, the people and staff who we now call friends. Clarrisa, Esteban, Kaylor, Emillio, who personalized our experience and made it so special and to our fellow travelers, Chuck, Mary, Doug and Donna are wonderful friends that we have kept in touch with and hope to see again. So if you are looking for a great place that brings great people together and is supported by a great staff....check it out...BUT don't tell too many people...

Room Tip: All the Villa's are very private and have great views.

This place is amazing. The most luxurious hotel we've stayed at anywhere we've traveled. The rooms are all private with their own infinity plunge pool. Despite all the amenities, there is nothing tacky about the rooms or the setting. The views from every point on the property, including your bedroom, are unparalleled.

If you want a romantic getaway where you don't do much and stay at the resort and relax, this place is perfect. If you are looking for a little more self sufficiency and adventure, here are a few small reservations:

1) the service is almost over the top. The staff goes almost over the top to the point of awkward, but this is a much better flaw than the other way around.
2) scary dogs at the bottom of the hill. If you choose to leave the hotel, you'll want to rent an ATV. Be ready to go FAST turning on to the main road (yes - the main road is still a dirt road) at the bottom of the hill because there are large, unconfined, dangerous dogs ready to attack you at the bottom. Upon complaint, the staff acknowledged this problem, but said they can't do much about it. Just be careful!

Again - if you're planning to stay and be pampered - this place is PERFECT!

Dear thebigpapi34,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel, we highly appreciate it! We are glad to hear you enjoyed excellent service, a tastefully decorated room and unparalleled views and that you felt your stay at our hotel was amazing! Our staff will always strive to make our guest's stay a memorable one.

Dogs in the rural areas of Costa Rica enjoy freedom. We have never had any complaints on the street dogs of the area before, but can certainly understand how someone who is not used to this can find it scary.

By and large, it seems you truly enjoyed yourself and we look forward to one day having you will visit us again!

Vicky

My boyfriend and I just arrived back in the states after what was the most amazing experience at Casa Chameleon in Mal Pais. It was truly more than we hoped for.

It was a bit of a trek to get to Mal Pais from San Jose, Costa Rica, but well worth it. We flew into San Jose and then took plane from SJO to Tambor, where Casa Chameleon arranged a car to pick us up and drive us to Mal Pais. The staff were amazing from the time that we arrived to the Tambor airport, to the time that we checked out.

Our driver stopped to point out some beautiful macaw in the tree, and we were greeted with delicious drinks at the villa made by Keylor, and a tour of the suites from Esteban when we arrived in Mal Pais. The Villas look even better than they do online - a real dream! They even had our last name on the door of our villa :) Our view was incredible and the amenities were perfect - we never felt as if we were missing anything. Housekeeping did a wonderful job every day as well.

We enjoyed delicious drinks at the bar daily - and delicious food made by the wonderful chefs Keylor and Emilio who we felt as if they were are friends when we left. The whole experience felt very exclusive and comfortable.

When we wanted to book an excursion or rent ATV's (which is highly suggested to get around Mal Pais/Santa Teresa), the staff were there to help. We were able to simply tell them what we wanted to do and they would book it for us - and the prices were not bad. From the Isla Tortuga tour to Horseback riding on the beach, we had so much fun.

I could keep going on forever about how much we loved our stay at Casa Chameleon and I hope we can come back soon!

Dear Kelcie,

An amazing experience from Check In to Check Out is exactly what we are striving for - thank you for letting us know we were able to deliver this to you!

We believe the reason Mal Pais continues to be magical is that you have to go out of your way to get there, and it is such a big reward for the adventurous people who do it.

I have shared your review with all our Staff, their only question was- when will you return?

Pura Vida!

Vicky

As we drove into Mal Pais I was a little disappointed as unlike other parts of Costa Rica suddenly we were back in the land of litter. This is not a sophisticated resort and is best suited to youngsters, hippies and surfies. I think my wife and I were the oldest to be seen during our stay. The nearby beach is nice and you will see many surfers here, Casa Chameleon is up a very steep hill and quite a long walk from the better beach area. If you stay here be aware you will need transport and the best options is to hire an APV at about $75 per day. We had not been advised nor realised this so given our short stay and by the time we had fully realised we ended up walking everywhere...pretty exhausting. This also applies to restaurants. Although the food served on the hotel was excellent if you want variety you will need a taxi or your own vehicle. The rooms are excellent with their own plunge pool and total seclusion with great views of the ocean. Apart from our experience on arrival with reception the service thereafter was impeccable. Not the most attractive part of Costa Rica but a good place to chill out after all the activities elsewhere.

Room Tip: The higher rooms are better but the suites are lower down the hill
