We stayed in Laguna Lodge for two nights last week, and found it to be satisfactory. The rooms are clean but quite dark, and due to being an eco-lodge, without air-con which meant it was a slight shock to the system being our first stop off in a far warmer country than England! Having looked at other pictures of rooms, ours were wooden and considerably darker than those which are painted (to the extent where even in day time we were using phone torches), so those in painted rooms may have a different overall impression.
Food is served in a buffet style, which, especially considering the location and difficulty they must encounter bringing supplies in, was enjoyable and copious in supply, and the varied fresh juices every day were very nice - we would especially recommend asking the person making the morning smoothies to make you their personal favourite! Those working in the dining room were eager to help and very polite.
The swimming pools are clean and we had a lot of fun in them - there are two (a family pool and a more standard pool), and towels were provided. Other aspects of the outside space - such as the frog area and butterfly zone - are also nicely done. However, if you are going into the 'botanical garden' section towards the back of the park, then be warned that mosquitoes are everywhere. EVERYWHERE!! Lots of mosquito repellent is essential, and (as we found out), they can bite through clothes...
The lodge is on the sea, and although there is a beach there it is not recommended that you swim (too dangerous), and, for us, the dark sand and mist on the beach was not nearly as appealing as the pools. In the evening, however, there is the option to go turtle watching on the beach and although a rather pricey activity, it is truly memorable and we would recommend it (although there are other places along the coast where you can do it).
Visiting the town of Tortuguero is also a key part of the package that tour operators provide, and the whole lodge is sent by boats at 3pm there. It feels very much like a package holiday as the entirety of the lodge leaves, and are given around an hour and a half in Tortuguero itself. For us, it felt remarkable that the town had become such a destination on the tourist map and we would not strongly recommend visiting - we felt quite uneasy and after having wandered up and down main shopping street remained outside near boat pickup area. It felt somewhat, to us, as though we were prying into the lives of the locals and although the tourism keeps the town going, we felt uncomfortable being there with children.
The final aspect of the stay at Laguna Lodge which most, if not all, experience, is the boat tours around the rivers (or canals) nearby. We had an excellent driver and saw sloths, turtles, birds and more. This was one of our favourite aspect to the stay, and we really enjoyed seeing the wildlife up close.
Overall, Laguna lodge provided a nice base, but the overall location for us (a family with 3 kids) was not as enjoyable as else where.

our stay in Laguna lodge was very pleasant. We stayed two nights, we arrived and left in rain, but in the middle the sun appeared, so we were lucky. Our guide Alfredo was very friendly and knew a lot about the place, the jungle and the animals. He give us also good tips for the rest of our journey in Costa Rica.
The lodge itself was spacious and clean, but simple. There was a nice buffet with a lot of choice.

Stay at Laguna Lodge for 2 nights, it's a typical eco friendly lodge. There are no A/C, phone, or TV in rooms of course don't expect to have any Wifi. But the purpose is to go off the grid for few days and enjoy the beautiful forest of Costa Rica and spend as most time with your love ones. If you really need to have Wifi or want to cool off a little go to the gift shop. The location also has a butterflies garden and there are some tree frogs to can see.

Dear Michael,

We are very happy to know that it has been a few days of disconnection with the world and connection with your loved ones.
At Laguna Lodge we try to protect the environment as much as possible and for that reason we do not offer AC in the rooms but ventilators and very ventilated rooms for example. Everything is about nature and we love knowing that you have enjoyed it with your family.

We look forward to seeing you again,

Just spent two days and two nights at Laguna lodge and had an amazing experience... if you love wild life this is the place , we saw so many animals we had to write them down in the end so we could tell our family back home . Can I mention two of the staff that made our stay that much better , firstly Laura even though only a small lady she was totally in control of a full 50 + seater coach , speaking to 5 different nationalities , she got us all there safe and sound .
Her knowledge of the area and it’s wildlife was excellent and was only too happy to answer any questions she was asked .
And one of our guides chito who with a stinking cold still managed to make our river trip interesting and fun ....if your looking for evening entertainment and a lively nightlife forget it , but if you want to exchange stories of animals and sightings with like minded people this is the place animals seen in one day
Green turtle laying it’s eggs
Bottle nose dolphins
Iguanas
Sloths
Spider , Howler , and capuchin monkeys
Toucans
Vultures
Eagles
Ant eaters
Fire flies
Lizards of all sizes and colours
Humming birds
Fly catchers
Coatis ( raccoon)
Wading birds
Boa constrictor
Crocodiles
Caimans
Parrots and parakeets
And I mean we honestly saw all these animals in one day
All in all a animal lovers dream 10 out of 10
