“Great Staff, beautiful grounds”
Reviewed 12 February 2012

The trip out to the hotel through the rivers and canals is a great trip in itself. The hotel has knowledgable guides that take you on tours and show you the wildlife. But my closest experience with howler monkeys was on the grounds of the hotel. They were awesome. The rooms were cool and clean. No A/C but the fans worked great. The food was wonderful and the staff was really friendly and knowledgeable.

Our well-managed Caravan tour brought us here for 2 nights. No luxury but a well designed and maintained rustic facility with friendly, responsive Costa Rican service and decent food.

Unfortunately our cabin #1 near the docks and reception suffered sub-woofer booming from the Tortuguero village disco until 3 in the morning. Very poor sleep both nights. If you have to stay here, maybe getting one of the far cabins might help, but maybe not.

The failure of the Pachira owner/managers to limit the disco noise is incomprehensible. All that's needed is to get the disco to unhook the sub-woofer at, say, midnight. The disco could continue as late as it wants without the sub-woofer whose deep vibrations radiate for miles -- also bad for the wildlife. Bottom line, a real shame.

Room Tip: Far away from docks/reception though walk time back will be longer

We spent two nights here & enjoyed the boat trips, wildlife and gardens.

The rooms were clean and relatively comfortable. We were in a block of 4 each with two rocking chairs on the balcony, where we could sit and watch the rain, birds and monkeys. In this part of the country it does rain a lot, so an umbrella is useful to get from the room / cabin to the restaurant.

There is coffee & crackers available 24 hours a day near the restaurant. The staff will happily get hot water if you'd rather have tea. The buffet meals are reasonable, lots of rice and beans, sometimes chicken (ask for more if they only give you one small piece) or fish. A good self serve salad bar. Some meals had a lot more variety and taste than others, and the vegetarians in our group had more choice at some meals, otherwise it was rice and beans and cauliflower!

It's worth getting up early for a walk around the gardens before the many other guests surface from their slumber! It can be quite busy at times, so it's not the best place for a relaxing stay away from the crowds. If you're looking for a sloth, ask the cleaners, they can point you in the right direction of the sloth trees.

On the whole, well worth a visit for the location and wildlife.

Stayed her during a recent tour to Costa Rico. Going to the hotel on the canal we saw american crocodile, spider and howler monkeys and many different birds. Our room was a cabin and we woke up every day to the sounds of howler monkeys on the roof and in the trees . The staff brought fresh coffee to our room every morning. The morning and afternoon nature cruises were wonderful. My wife and I can't wait to go again

I stayed in the Anhinga Lodge of this property, which is a group of single-room cabins on stilts above the jungle floor, connected by elevated walkways. The facility includes a lounge, restaurant, bar, pool, and several covered outdoor areas for relaxing. It is located near the Tortuguero National Park entrance on the jungle side of a large lagoon formed by the river near the Caribbean. Access is by boat or plane only.

Each cabin has a small porch with rockers, a large rectangular room with two solid walls of windows (screens, no glass), a private bath, hot water in the shower, but not in the basin. The ceiling fan is not really adequate during the hot afternoons, but evenings are cool enough for comfortable sleeping. No television or telephones; wake-up calls consist of coffee, tea, and juice delivered to the cabins during a specified time frame and howler monkeys and various birds earlier than that. The delightful sound of the ocean across the lagoon can be heard during the night, except during the equally delightfful night-time downpour on the metal roof.

Some bathrooms display a sign that says to put used toilet paper in the trash can rather than the toilet. Mine did not. It's OK to ignore the sign, just don't overdo it.

Anhinga Lodge is not a destination itself, but it is a pleasant base amid lush vegetation and critters (toucans and other birds, iguanas, monkeys, sloths) for exploring the national park by boat.
