My family of 3 stayed in a Jungle Family Cabin. The room was fine, bed comfy, a/c worked. There was a tv but we never needed it, because there is an ocean and a jungle and pool! We were here for 3 days in between staying in Eco Lodges and I actually just booked this room while we were waiting for space to open up in a more "rustic" (though the eco lodges we relocated to was quite elegant), so it was a change to be in a resort type hotel. The pool was great, the breakfast was big and filling. The young woman at the front desk when we arrived was helpful in setting up a Snorkeling Trip for us that was fabulous and Harvey (who was working security at the time) acted as a nature guide and showed us bats, snakes and and a Toucan Nest right in the parking lot. He even convinced me to let a giant golden orb spider to walk on my hand. There are some funky aspects to Carriblue. It is not a Best Western. The bathroom had a septic smell, but great water pressure. The windows didn't open, but there was a ceiling fan and ac. It seems like they are working to renovate a little bit and I hope they are successful.

Room tip: Jungle rooms are higher quality.

We have just spent four nights at this hotel, and there are some things people need to know about the place when booking. We had originally booked a jungle deluxe cabin. We changed our reservation before we came to upgrade to an ocean front room with AC.
Now here's the thing you should know. Cariblue Hotel acquired another hotel property, the Totem Hotel, a small beachfront hotel, recently and added it to their property. The original property located in the forest up a winding road was probably once a beautiful place, it is filled with lush rainforest and lots of plants and flowers. The main reception/dining room buildings are getting older and in need of repair, some of which is being done. The recently acquired section down by the road and the beach is in need of maintenance. There was no WiFi in this part of the resort for the four days we were there in fact for two days there was no internet access at all, even for the hotel itself. Everyone else in the area had it so it must be an equipment issue. The AC was a portable machine that I had to fix myself to get connected to the vent, it sounded like a small jet engine and was so loud it could not be used while sleeping. The bathroom had a few cracks long the floor line and various insects would appear at night including a large brown cockroach on the last night. The drains all smelled and certainly needed cleaning. Friends we met there were staying in the same section and they ran out of water reqularly and had some of the same problems we did. We did not expect a full service North American resort but did expect a three star hotel as stated. This older section is not being looked after and needs attention. Breakfast is included in the price of the rooms and is adequate but occasionally missing some of the standard tropical fare. There is a very nice pool in the older section by the reception area. They promote a 'Happy Hour' pool bar special everyday, but there was never a bartender to be found, so much for happy. We did not eat at the dining room, it is trying to be upscale and expensive but there are a great many local spots close by that have great food at cheaper prices.
We checked out early on the last day, and even though they had coffee available, sorry no breakfast at 6:30 AM, they would not even get us any milk for the coffee, black or no coffee at all.
And just to finish it off they insist on making all guests wear wrist bands, like we were in an all inclusive resort, but they still insisted on asking you what room you were in at breakfast and security at the gate never looked at them at night, what's the point of them at all. Some of the staff tried really hard to be helpful and friendly and were apologetic when things did not work, especially Harvey, who worked at the front desk but we met him working the security gate as the regular guy never showed. Very nice person and very helpful. He even lent me his bike for and hour.
So, if you book this resort stay away from the ocean front rooms, many other guests told us that the original hotel rooms were very nice. It was our mistake to assume the standard would be the same. Works needs to be done.

Room tip: stay in the original Cariblue hotel section

The hotel is located right in front of Playa Cocles and it has 2 entrances. The security is pretty tight, there is a guard in each entrance taking note of who's going out and coming back at night. It is 10mins away from Puerto Viejo center, around 20mins from Cahuita and Manzanillo. The breakfast is included, typical costarican breakfast with pinto, eggs, there's omelet, toast, fruits and cereal. Our room was amazing - 404- it had ocean view, very spacious, had a fridge, tv, a/c and a small terrace. Bring repelent, lots of mosquitoes

This little resort is in a very picturesque area with great beaches, some awesome surf and lots of things to do. The food is good and the rooms quirky but adequate. If you want to see the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica this is a good area to visit.

We spent a wonderful 3 days here and, given the opportunity, would definitely stay again. Great location - rooms in the jungle and a beautiful beach across the road. We hired bikes for a day and explored the coastal villages. Great staff, lovely pool, good restaurant. They organise a night walk in the hotel grounds on some evenings - well worth signing up for that.
