My wife and I stayed at Casa Marcellino, on the edge of Cahuita, for six nights. Our detached chalet was beautifully appointed, with everything we could have wanted, including refrigerator, coffee maker, rice cooker, cable TV, cooker, microwave, washing area, outside shower and a big, airy bathroom. The room was cleaned every single day. The owners, Luciano and Maricé, could not have been more helpful. We were so sorry to leave but will definitely return the next time we visit Costa Rica. We would highly recommend Casa Marcellino to anyone looking for a tranquil place to stay in Cahuita yet only a short walk to the beach and an easy, flat walk to the town's facilities.

Once you set foot on the grounds of this tropical paradise, you will see the pride and joy that the owners have taken in this lovely place. The entire area surrounding the cabinas is meticulously manicured and very well taken care of. The property is very secure, and is kept under lock and key at all times... though we never felt unsafe in Cahuita and we walked around at all hours of the day, so it seems the locks were for precaution only.

The little houses are very well built, well-appointed and very clean. The bathrooms are large and each patio has its own hammock. There is also a BBQ area that is shared by all. We could hear the waves breaking on the beach from the cabina, which was an unexpected delight.

We initially booked an 8-night stay at Casa Marcellino and arrived mid-day for check in. We took a shuttle to the area and had no car. We were a little early, so the owner welcomed us to leave our bags with him while they put the finishing touches on the room. He suggested that we explore the town and return later for a proper check-in. We had no problem with this, so off we went for a walk into town. The walk was not too far (about a half a mile, or about 1 km) and took us down a pebbly lane and near the gorgeous coast and right into the village.

Once in town, we quickly realized that Cahuita was not quite what we’d expected… it was much smaller than anticipated. For instance, it only few small mini-market type places to buy pre-made food or drink. Without a car, it would have been a little inconvenient to transit to a larger market. Many of the restaurants were only open for dinner, making breakfast and lunch a challenge because the few places in town we tried for those meals were not so great.

Casa Marcellino was perfect for a few days’ stay, but it was not going to be great for our entire trip (at least for us, because we had no car). For some travelers, it may be perfect for a longer stay with your own transportation. For this reason, we asked the owners if we could shorten our stay and they agreed to allow us to adjust our booking a little, and we were very appreciate for their flexibility.

Please know that our change in reservation had nothing to do with the quality of Casa Marcellino… the cabinas, hosts and grounds were amazing, it was just that we were seeking a little more of the town in the way of markets, etc. We were very grateful for the flexibility of the owners and for allowing us to adjust our reservation.

After a couple of days of staying, Cahuita grew on us and we began to become quite fond of its small-town charm. We now wish to return for another stay sometime, and are happy to have found Casa Marcellino for our next visit.

What a great find! Luciano and Maricé are a wonderful couple who exhibit the perfect blend of the laid-back Caribbean living yet are friendly, warm, and welcoming hosts. They have created and maintained a beautiful property full of flora and fauna including 3 large avocado trees and a guava tree. Maricé picked some avocados and guava fruit and gave them to us to enjoy- such a thoughtful gesture.

The 4 wooden casitas nestled into the property are like fully equipped doll houses. Perfect for cooking a breakfast or dinner and enjoying the wooden porch while listening to the birds, enjoying the mature trees and plants and distant howler monkeys. A great sense of design and detail both in and outside the wooden casitas.

We love the location of Casa Marcellino. About 2 blocks (200 mts) from the beach called Playa Negra. About 4 blocks (400 mts) from Sobre las Olas (best fresh red snapper/pargo rojo) and about 10 minute walk to the Central Park/Cocos/main strip with a smattering of laid-back shops/bars/restaurants.

One of the striking things about Casa Marcellino was how clean and fresh everything looked and smelled. Even the mop, broom and dust pan looked brand new! Having stayed in 3 other places in Cahuita and 1 closer to Puerto Viejo, this is not always the case and was a refreshing welcome.

The only change I would suggest would be instead of 2 small bedrooms in each casita make 1 larger bedroom. It would be way more comfortable because the bed took up the entire room. That way 2 adults can comfortably walk around the room to access the closet, open a suitcase, walk around the bed and open/close the bedroom door. The bedroom felt too small for 2 adults so we used 1 room to sleep in and the other room to change in.

Other than this, we love it and can't wait to go back!!
A great place to unwind from Central Valley living's traffic, air and sound pollution and kick back and enjoy the simple, special place that is Cahuita.

We stayed 4 nights with Marice and Luciano and had a great time. They were very helpful and caring! The hut was very clean and didn't lack in anything. It is a quiet place, close to the beach Playa negra and far from the touristy area. We would have loved to stay longer.

We stayed for one week at Casa Marcellino. We had a great time. The place has amazing decorations. They were very thoughtful with the place was designs and put together. We prepared at least two meals everyday. Marice and Luciano are the owners. They are such kind people. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome, comfortable, loved, help us with all our questions and help us with other needs. The place is safe, quiet and comfortable. They is a great place to stay. I would stay here if we came back in town. I highly recommend staying here.
