This was our 5th trip back to Costa Rica and Hotel Cantarana. Going in February you can be assured of outstanding weather and surf. We found this hotel in 2013 and always stay here on vacation. There have been additions to the pool area which include a pair of couples padded swings and an outdoor bed for two next to the pool. The grounds are well kept and you can hear the birds every morning mixed in with a howler monkey every now and then. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is very, very good. They have eliminated the fruit plate on a few of the breakfast entrees but you can order a fruit plate for a small additional charge. Every breakfast was incredible. The restaurant is clean and well kept and we had dinner there one evening. It is a romantic open air spot just above the hotel office and is ideal for a nice dinner. There are 5 rooms at this hotel and they best accommodate singles or couples. Even though we love this property for its many qualities, the best part is the staff. Mostly younger persons from the Canada, the US and Britian, they are friendly, knowledgeable and will go out of their way to insure you have a great time. They will secure dinner reservations, day trips, tours and excursions for you. They also work in the restaurant and bar during breakfast and dinner. They have added a happy hour which is very competitive with other nearby establishments. Additionally, they now have a certified massage therapist who is available to come to the hotel and have a yoga class 3 times a week for a very nominal fee. This year Jenna, Evelyne, Charlotte, Anna and the other young ladies made us feel right at home. It goes without saying that we are already looking at flights down for next winter. It's one thing to go to a great hotel, its an added bonus when the staff make you feel like family.

It is rather a small place with exchange students living on the premises and sometimes working the restaurant or hotel business.
Pleasant atmosphere.Sometime the howling monkeys could be heard or seen across the street. Breakfast and coffee is very good.
We had dinner one night and were pleased with it. Unfortunately the next two days the kitchen was closed for dinner.
The bathroom needs improving The sliding door which is the entrance was not lockable. I somehow fixed it with a screwdriver to lock. Our friends who travelled with us to CR had a problem with the AC leaking on the bed and their refrigerator didn't work. There are many places to eat around within minutes on foot.
Over all if you don't expect a lot this place is fine.

Room Tip: Make sure your door looks and the refrigerator is working

We visited twice just for good and drink.
The chef worked hard and the results were great.
The location is as described, minutes from the beach, from surfing etc and is well laid out. Nice view from the dining area and overall very pleasant.
However, they price in US Dollars, but provide the bill in Colones and convert it, then your change comes in Colones. No real issue with that but they forget the 10% discount offered by their sister business at El Manglar. The service charge is added to your bill.
Maybe just us but trying to account for your happy hour beers and food seemed so simple until the bill came and some staff definitely converted wrongly. This was challenged agreed and rectified by the manageress to the bewilderment of the server.
It never amounted to much but it just felt wrong.
The servers didn’t keep up with the chef who was on top of her game. Food prepared, bell rung but servers failed to act on it first time several times leaving freshly prepared food simply waiting.

So yes it was worth a visit but ask for and check your bill. Top marks chef :) and could do better servers although all perfecting nice.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in room #5. The room was very clean and a good size for us, and the bed was very comfortable. This particular room is directly under the restaurant so there is some, very minimal, noise during open times, but not bad at all, and honestly their open times were during our awake times, so no issues with it keeping us awake. The grounds and pool area were beautiful and we enjoyed spending afternoons lounging by the pool. There are only 5 rooms at this hotel, so we usually had the pool all to ourselves. The staff were friendly and speak excellent English as many of them are from Canada or the US working there on a work away program. The only issues we had were one unsatisfactory dinner at the restaurant, but we enjoyed other delicious meals there after that, so it was a one-off. The other, more bothersome, issue was a dog, apparently owned by one of the workers, that was allowed to roam free and was very aggressively barking and following my husband and I as we walked from our room to the office. The owner was yelling at it from the worker’s quarters but did not actually come to retrieve the dog for several minutes. The same dog found me alone on a lounge chair early one morning and once again began barking at me in a threatening way. I am uneasy around dogs I don’t know and this really bothered and frightened me. In my opinion, a dog that is that untrained should not be allowed to roam free around your guests. Other than the unfortunate encounters with the dog, our stay was wonderful. We really enjoyed it here and would definitely stay again.

Spent Christmas week in Costa Rica at Hotel Cantarana. It was our first time visiting Costa Rica and we couldn’t have asked for a better trip.

The hotel itself is quite small (only 5 rooms) which my fiancé and I were not used to, but it ended up making for a really memorable experience. The staff is incredible - just very accommodating, friendly and helpful making it a welcoming place for all.

The food and bar were also great. While there are a few other restaurants/bars within walking distance of Cantarana (all of which are good), we found ourselves wanting to eat most of our meals at the hotel just because the food was THAT good. Breakfast each day was freshly prepared and included with the cost of the room. They changed up the dinner menu depending on the day, but there was always a lot of diverse options of both local, and international, cuisines.

While Cantarana does have a small pool, it is a less than five minute walk to the beach and the hotel has towels and chairs for you to use. The beach itself was fantastic given how close it was to the hotel, quiet, safe + beautiful sunsets.
