We had a wonderful time. Villa Hermosa was so charming - it was a secluded oasis with amazingly beautiful grounds. There was so much nature - birds, frogs, etc. And bats at night kept the mosquitos away! We had so much fun playing pool and darts in the game room, playing horseshoes in the backyard and swimming in the pool! Judah helped us plan all of our activities - rafting, zip line, hot springs, hanging bridge hour. He knew the best ones and made all our reservations for us. Every single excursion was perfect! I’d certainly recommend Villa Hermosa to anyone traveling to Costa Rica.
We had such an amazing experience at Villa Hermosa. The grounds and the rooms were so beautiful and tidy. It is clear that Judah and Michele and the staff take pride in the beauty of the property. We had so much fun cooking in the outdoor kitchen and eating an outdoor dining room. In the mornings we enjoyed the pool and gardens. In a short drive, we were in the quaint village of Monterrey or, if you go the other way, the bustling town of La Fortuna. We got a car service from the airport and Alamo actually delivered the rental car to us the next day. Such a great service—thank you Judah for recommending.
We will definitely return!!!
Impeccable grounds, nature is all around you. Accommodations are great as is the host. Location is close to all the Arenal attractions yet the property has a wonderful off the beaten path feel. Springs Resort right around the corner if you want to take advantage of all they have to offer.
This was our first trip to Costa Rica. We flew into Liberia at 3pm and had Mario pick us up to take us to Villa Hermosa, and we were so glad we did! Having never been here before, I would not have wanted to try to find my way to Villa Hermosa in the dark for the first time! Mario was very personable and professional and I would highly suggest using his services to get to and from the airport. Had we tried this on our own the first time, we might have turned around and gone home. Now keep in mind, between driving three hours to our own airport in the US and the flight, we had already been up for 12 hours. By the time we got to the Villa we had been traveling for 16 hours. Between the roads being curvy and rough in parts, being overtired and getting carsick Mario was the only way to go.
Judah met us when we arrived and showed us around. Unfortunately for him I don't think we were the most pleasant of guests upon our arrival as we were all spent, but he handled us all very well.
We chose the Villa Hermosa because of its amenities, the reviews, and the fact we like to be away from the large crowds and be part of the culture and country. It was the perfect fit for us once we became acclimated to where we were at.
Now, I won't lie, the roads surrounding the Villa freaked us out the first two days. Since we had come in at night, we didn't get a good view of where we were going. The roads surrounding the Villa are rough but once you figure out where you are going and you realize it's only for about a 10-15 min. stretch before you get to good roads, it isn't a big deal. The first two days we crawled along trying to figure out where we were going and trying to miss the holes in the road. By days three and four....no problem. By days 5 and 6 we were making comments about how it must be someones first day traveling down the roads.
Judah, arranged for our car to be delivered to us our second day since we arrived late, which was wonderful. Judah also arranged our activities for us which worked out very well. He's very accommodating and flexible. We had originally asked him to schedule a private mountain biking tour for us, but after one day there we realized that we would not last biking in the hills with the heat. So, we asked if we could cancel and had him book white water rafting instead. He did this with no problems.
In the end we spent two days at The Springs, we went to Mistico Hanging Bridges, Skytrek for ziplining, and whitewater rafting with WAVE expeditions. We loved all of our activities and Villa Hermosa really is centrally located as a base for your day trips.
The Villa Hermosa was what we were looking for in accommodations. The facilities themselves are up to date and well maintained. They look like the pictures on the site. We always felt safe, both at the Villa itself and in the community as well. We had plenty of privacy. I think we spent more time at the Villa than Judah! But don't worry, he was always there to help by sending a quick message when needed! We thoroughly enjoyed using the pool, dart board, horseshoe pit, and pool. We also enjoyed the wildlife and vegetation. Misals keeps up the grounds beautifully! While we enjoyed trying the food in the area we also made meals at the Villa as well. Light housekeeping is provided once a day by Jazmin.... which we also enjoyed. We'd leave and things were magically picked up when we returned. Very thankful for this when it came to the dishes as the sink is small and there is not hot water in the kitchen sink. Our only complaint about the Villa is that the beds were too hard for us, but everyone has different preferences when it comes to the sleep.
Oh...did I mention the views around the area?? You can see the Arenal Volcano everyday either on your drive or on your walk.
If you are looking for a place to get away and be a part of Costa Rica, then please stay at Villa Hermosa. You will be glad you did. I hope we will be returning some day.
I never write reviews based on vendor requests. You can trust me to be straight forward. I LOVE Villa Hermosa! If you are traveling Costa Rica with the expectation of living luxuriously and being waited on hand and foot, then this is NOT the place for you! If you want to experience Costa Rica as a local (Tico) this is the PERFECT place for you! I am of the opinion you cannot say you have been to Costa Rica until you have driven on the roads (especially the dirt, boulder and pot filled ones), visited the hot springs and seen the wildlife, ALL of which can be accomplished with a stay Villa Hermosa.
When you book here you will have use of 3 buildings on the property. The first building, the main villa, offers an open air kitchen, sitting room and dining room. i said open air not air conditioned. This is perfect for taking in the wonderful breeze and beautiful sounds of the tropics. Yes, there will be an occasional bug flying by - its Costa Rica! However, there are not many mosquitoes because the bats take care of them naturally. We wore an insect repellent wrist band our entire trip and they worked great. I did find if you are a person who ALWAYS seems to get bit by bugs, no matter what you do, you will still be the person who gets a FEW bug bites in Costa Rica. We did not experience any bug bite issues at Villa Hermosa! the main Villa also offers an air conditioned bedroom with a king and full size bed and a very large bathroom with super large shower! The water in the Villa is spring water and tastes amazing and is very safe to drink. We prefer spring water and filled our bottles full before we left for the south pacific part of the country.
The 2nd building is a cute, quaint and quiet casita offering 2 beds and a bathroom. The main Villa and the casita are located on opposite sides of the pool from each other for privacy. The casita does not have air conditioning but its not a problem since it offers screens where the walls and the roof meet so there is a wonderful tropical cross breeze. It also provides for perfect sleeping listening to the sounds of the jungle- the sounds people pay money for as apps on their phones to help them sleep at night! Record it at night and have the sounds for free for when you return home.
The 3rd building is an open air game room with a bar, pool table, dart board and board games. So fun if you have time to enjoy it. We were on the go the entire time so we didn't have time to use it. We will be back and plan on using it when we return.
We made dinner and breakfast in the well equipped kitchen. It was nice to be visited by the numerous tropical birds while eating. We did not use the pool but would have loved to. The gardens around the pool are beautifully maintained and manicured - with a group of fruit bats located under a big palm leaf. Wish we wouldn't have planned so many activities to enjoy all the Villa has to offer - next time we plan to just stay and do that.
Finally, and most importantaly, our host Judah was such a help. Our flight landed late in San Jose. We planned to get into our rental car and drive, but Judah suggested we have a driver meet us outside the airport and then have our car delivered the next day. Without question this is the way to go. Why stay in San Jose and waste 3 hours the next day driving, when you can just go for it when you get in? We asked to have Mario pick us up. He was waiting for us outside the terminal. We got into his very nice air conditioned van and rested while he drove us 3.5 hours. He is a very professional driver and his vehicle is very nice. It is very worth it to have him pick you up!
Upon arrival at 2am, Judah happily greeted us (even at such a late hour) understood we were tired, showed us to our beds and assured us our car would arrive the next day at 10am so we could begin our activities. 10 am the next day our Alamo rental car showed up. The office in La Fortuna had transferred our reservation from San Jose and we were all set. We had a Suzuki Vitara A automatic ( I can drive stick but no one else can so if I got hurt we would be out of luck). It is the perfect size car for 2-21 year olds and 2-50+ year olds with 4 big rolling luggage bags and 4 small ones. The process was simple, quick and so accommodating!! Thank you Juanito!
We had planned an activity for 1pm the day after we got in. Judah met with us in the morning and discussed our plans with us and based on that, suggested we buy a 2 day pass to Club Rio Resort and Springs -literally a 10 minute drive from Villa Hermosa. That was an excellent recommendation and we would not have known to do it if he had not suggested it. We spent an entire day there in addition to our already planned activities and then we went back the next day to have dinner and relax in the hot springs after a long day of hiking.
Judah did NOT have to sit and chat with us each night and morning but he did because he was truly interested in hearing how our day went and finding out what we wanted to do so that he could give us info on how to make our trip the best it could be. He lives in a house on the property and is available to help with activities, restaurant suggestions, just basically anything you could possible need! Hes low key and stress free but engaging to talk to, the kind of person we love to be around! He is the reason our trip to the Arenal area was everything it could be.
I'm almost hesitant to post this review because Villa Hermosa may become so busy that I wont be able to book it when I want to return. This happens to me frequently but at the same time, its too good not to share. PLEASE, DON'T BOOK VILLA HERMOSA IF YOU WANT A HOTEL EXPERIENCE WITH LUXURY! PLEASE DO book it if you want to have A TRULY AUTHENTIC COSTA RICA EXPERIENCE AS A LOCAL!!
I am hoping to add photos to this review later, I'm home and must get back to work (unfortunately)
