I live in Shanghai, and book Classical Hotel whenever I have a visit (friends, family, etc). I have slept myself in this place several times. Placed in the middle of an area known as Old Shanghai, it is near the city center, but the area still has some of the taste and atmosphere of the old times of the city (delicious!) , in contrast with the modernity of the city center. The building is Classical Chinese style, the interior is comfortable and clean, and prices are very reasonable. The hotel is occupied mainly by Chinese, so the breakfast has the local stuff, totally different to Western breakfast, but worth trying. Reception staff speak English. A nice place to stay!! Makes you feel in China with a good level of comfort.

Still, if you value high luxe, this could not be your hotel.

We really enjoyed our recent 3 nights at the Shanghai Classical Hotel. It was very well located within the Old Town tourist & shopping district, was a short taxi ride to Nanjing Rd and Peoples Square. We were also able to walk about 2km to the Bund. Our standard room on 4th floor was clean and spacious enough, staff was friendly and spoke some English. The hotel is better known by the locals for the restaurant Lao Fandian located on the premises and serves very good Shanghai style cuisine. Breakfast was included in room rate was typical Chinese style rice congee, steamed buns etc and may not suit all tastes. We filled up on it ...but there is a Starbucks in the lobby and McDonald`s across the road for those who are picky. There is also a small park a short walk away with a small bamboo forest, people excercising and sitting with tea with birds in cages. Hotel suits the leisure traveller and we would not hesitate to stay there again
