Arrived after 12 hour flight to this amazing hotel. Very palatial with an amazing reception/bar/dining area. You just stand and stare for some time. You will be hard pressed to find a cleaner, more well equipped hotel.
One night stay with midday checkout so we used the pool. Marble for miles and we were the only ones using it. Fantastic.
Easy walk in either direction to People’s square or The Bund.
Great selection for breakfast
Would definitely stay here again.

We stayed at the Grand Central for 2 nights after a cruise. From the outside in the hotel just blew us away. The spectacular atrium lobby is a good indication of the rooms. Our 'basic' room 1120 was spacious bordering on huge (500-600 sq ft) and had everything one could need for leisure or business travel. The bathroom with separate spacious shower and bath was equally luxurious. The design was beautiful, the internet fast, free and easy, and the room had everything you could need (fridge, iron, coffee maker, safe, AC adapters, etc). The bed was very comfortable and Jiujang is a quiet street making for a good sleep. The location is ideal, a 2 minute walk to E Nanjing, 5 minutes to People's Park and 20 to the Bund. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Luxury at a reasonable price.

Room tip: Rooms along Jiujang have a view of E Nanjing and the early morning Tai Chi crowd. Breakfast buffet is worth the small extra $s.

This hotel is in a great location behind the busy street on the Bund - quiet but very convenient. The rooms are big and very grand - gold (or gold coloured!) taps and showers, a very decent gym and pool and a grand lobby. Rooms are well appointed with all the amenities of a 5-star hotel (with a coffee plunger and a packet of ground coffee), but overall the decor feels a bit rundown (some stains on the walls and fraying carpets and wrinkled hotel directory and notepaper). The service is efficient (though a bit perfunctory), but it's already miles better than many hotels - the housekeeping staff all say hello when they walk past.
Breakfast is good though not the full spread like some Western 5-star hotels, but for business travellers, it has all the requisite breakfast items. All in all the hotel is great value for money and in an excellent location, but don't expect super-luxe.

Room tip: As for rooms on higher floors

I cannot say enough good things about the hotels in China. This was another magnificent hotel that was positioned walking distance from the bund and from other great restaurants, bars, and street walking.

Very nice western hotel in the heart of Shanghai. The attentive service is above and beyond. The lobby lounge and restaurant offer a very nice selection of food and drinks. The rooms are luxurious and well equipped. The location is with walking distance to shopping, restaurants The Bund, Yu Garden and the pedestrian walkway. If you are trying to decide between the Grand Central Hotel and other name brand hotels such as Renaissance or Radisson choose the Grand Central. It is an amazing hotel and I very much enjoyed my stay.
