I stayed at 'Evergreen' five years ago and I've been recommending it to friends ever since, but having gone back recently, I'm more than slightly embarrassed. The room was 300 rupees per night which is a fair price in Jaipur, but it was really filthy. The bathroom was swarming with little black flies and the place definitely had not been cleaned in a long time. The corridors were dark and dusty and this hotel has zero aesthetic charm.
The management are not friendly or helpful. Once you've checked in, they barely look up from the television when you walk through the reception.
Positively, we had such a comfortable mattress on the bed! I slept so well there! While you mainly have to look at the garden through the bars separating it from its pricier neighbour, you are allowed to go through the door marked 'no admission' if you ask first, and it is a nice open space for sunbathing or relaxing with a book.
The great thing about this hotel was the roof-top restaurant. The chilly chicken was one of the best I've had in India and the value for money was fantastic. It isn't atmospheric and doesn't have any views, but the staff are friendly enough and the menu is decent. Cheap breakfast items are a really good buy, only 20 rupees for butter toast and 25 rupees for porridge.
The location of 'Evergreen' is superb, only five minutes walk from the centre and if you don't mind bringing your own sheet and not touching any surfaces in your room, it's an acceptable back-packer stay.
