The first thing you notice about Vista House is that the owner Waruni responds quickly and efficiently to your enquiries, both before and after booking. Try to book direct via her website.
The second is the location in the hills above Kandy, away from the noise and busy traffic of the town and with lovely views across the valley.
Then when you meet Waruni she is instantly welcoming and delightful. She loves meeting different people, she has very good English, she is so helpful in organising excursions and she is a kind and charming person.
The rooms are bright and modern and you have shared use of a small kitchen in the common area with a refrigerator.
Breakfasts are delicious and varied each day. For two nights of our stay we had dinner too, which we enjoyed immensely. If you want lovely traditional home cooking (not too spicy!), you will love the food here. Or, if you don't want to get a tuk-tuk into town in the evenings, you can also walk five minutes for a buffet at a luxury hotel nearby with great views.
Waruni also uses a wonderful tuk-tuk driver called Raja, who took us on on a city tour one day and to see the elephants at Pinnawala another. He is a very good, kind and honest man, who made sure we were in the right place at the right time to see everything at its best. His rates are also very reasonable.
Another day we went by taxi to Sigiriya (highly recommended if you are fit and active) and Dambulla, a long drive but perfectly doable in a day if you don't want to stay further north than Kandy.
After leaving we toured the centre and south of Sri Lanka, staying in four hotels where the facilities were grander and the prices far higher, but when we look back there is no doubt that Vista House was easily our favourite.
