Owner description: Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple. The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

As par5bof a Saga tour we visited this iconic temple. It was a bit special and our guide took us through step by step.

Visited during puja (prayers & offerings) which meant it was busy but still good. Declined local guide and managed to glean enough by ambling around and using our LP guidebook.

Arrived early and enjoyed the various areas within the temple. Many locals waiting for the service to begin. Enjoyed hearing about the history of this sacred place and the detail was intriguing. Location is also very special on the lake.

Very interesting site. Worth a visit. Buddhist, Hindu Temples and Christian church all on one site. If you have time visit the British Garrison Cemetery. This is close to the temple and if you’re lucky you’ll meet the man who helps tend the graves and is an encyclopaedia of history about the folk buried there.
