This vast gold encrusted Hindu temple is centrally located and is enormous with lots to see. Shoes and shirts have to be removed

We arrived at about 2pm and were told the temple didn't open until 3pm, so if you want to see inside make sure you go later in the afternoon. We went for an ice cream and came back at 4 and the temple was open. It's definitely worth going during prayer time (4 to 5pm seems good).

As mentioned by many, you need to take off your shoes and men need to remove their shirts. It was interesting to wander round and have a look inside. We asked but couldn't find any English speaking guides when we were there - I think that would really help you understand the rituals and areas of the temple.

I believe this temple steeped in history and venerated by almost all Hindus in Sri Lanka and probably known world wide was founded in 948AD, that is 1070 odd years ago.
The grounds even after 30 plus years of an absolutely destructive civil war that engulfed this lovely peaceful Island Paradise of Sri Lanka (earlier known as Tabrobane and Ceylon) , well known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Is quiet, peaceful and reflects the ancient origins of this must visit venue.
