On our way through Jaffna's backyard I asked the driver to head for this well. Well, the word "bottomless" was quite appealing for us. The place is definitely quite nice and most probably it has a bottom or it is connected with some underwater stream.

Unfortunately, when we arrived, it was raining like hell. We stepped out of the car through ankle-deep water, entered this place (can't remember if we even had to pay entrance fee for all this mess?), made two or three pictures, were nearly sliding into the well because the boardside walk was extremely slippery, and finally gave up thus returning to the car after one two minutes.

With other words:if you pass by, take some pictures from outside (without paying entrance fees) and continue your trip. If you don't pass by, you don't lose anything. There are much worthier wells to see in India.

This is a complete eyewash. The caption given as a bottomless well is misleading. There is a bottom & the signage clearly shows that. The place is neglected, filthy, stinking & full of local thugs & touts. The thugs do not allow you to park the vehicles nearby & touts demand for large sums of money when the vehicles are parked far away. the local government authorities & the law enforcement close their eyes as these touts are the cats claws of unseen powerhouses. It is not worth visiting this place.

The mystery of the well has now been resolved. It has a bottom, and is over 52 mts deep. Beautiful clear water, often used by the locals for bathing, swimming. Another must spot when travelling in Jaffna

Rather Ho Hum. Not much to see and bereft of any real history. At one point the fresh water that sits above the salt water was used for irrigating nearby fields, now it is just a rather decrepit well with a local 'entrepreneur' selling entry tickets.

Thank PSie
