I could actually write unlimited wows here
This hotel is absolutely stunning. Jaw droppingly wow.
We arrived at a less than attractive alleyway that didn’t seem to fit the description but it leads you to a different entrance after about ten mins drive.
You are then in the middle of luscious paddy fields and farmland with locals working and mountains in the distance. Our driver dropped us off at a collection point he couldn’t go beyond. A golf buggy arrived to collect us and our luggage and took us in another 5min journey to an impressive modern structure which is the reception and restaurant.
It looks totally out of place but also totally right. Opposite is a lake with a huge family apartment which if you book you reach by boat.
There are only 7 ‘rooms’ in the entire place. We booked one of the more simple apartments which are equally stunning but at check in they said they were upgrading us to their newest and best room - a floating house in the middle of the main lake! We’d seen this and it was the most expensive place - hence not booking it - so what a thrill to be upgraded!

To reach any of the rooms you are escorted by golf buggy. Most are completely set apart from each other in the middle of farmland or lakes and all with amazing views and an incredible finish.

To get to ours a little paddle boat met us and took us on the 5min float to board. It’s an entirely modern and beautifully decorated and equipped ‘house’. The bedroom was wall to wall windows giving incredible views of the lake - huge king bed, soft white cotton linen, all with wooden flooring and furniture. It had its own router for WiFi and a phone to connect to the reception which if you need anything or want to go anywhere they come to collect you in the boat.
The bathroom was huge with shower and outside was a massive lower and upper deck for sunbathing, dining and a jacuzzi. We could’ve just stayed there and eaten if we wanted but chose to head back to the main restaurant.
The food on offer was incredible from steak and rack of lamb to pasta or Sri Lankan curries. A huge wine list was available and service was impeccable. We chatted a lot to the chef who was well travelled and trained with Gary Rhodes in Dubai so the quality was amazing.

Sleeping in the boat house was a delight with great AC and just the darkness and noises of the wildlife outside. I’m someone every insect loves to bite and I get bad reactions instantly - I think I had just three small bites so for anyone
worried about mosquitoes - it’s fine.

Waking to the sunrise and dawn call of insects and frogs and birds was lovely. We headed back for breakfast which again had a huge selection on offer of western and Sri Lankan courses. We even had time to quickly use the fresh spring water pool on the grounds.

This isn’t like a hotel. It’s definitely somewhere you can lose yourself and if you want to - not see a soul. Given it only has 7 rooms and they are all remotely located from each other, don’t stay here if you’re expecting a busy, pool with bar, bustling restaurant and nightlife kind of place. It’s the exact opposite.

The grounds are vast and every fruit and vegetable you can imagine is organically home grown and on view as you drive around.

They’re actually adding three more ‘rooms’ some by another side of the lake and one high up as a ‘tree house’ but that’s it. No plans to get any bigger which is great because this place is so special and we can’t wait to come back !

There are lovely aspects to this accommodation- particularly the architecture of the main building. My room was spacious but had someone sweeping outside for most of the afternoon so did not have the privacy I would have expected.

You can ride a bike or be driven to the pool. I was left there with a wireless phone to call when I wanted to be collected. It took over half an hour and a second phone call to be collected. The pool is also very disappointing - in need of maintenance along with the broken loungers.

I had dinner served outside of my room which was delicious (Sri Lankan curry) and a very nice setting.

The overwater rooms look better on the internet and I believe mosquitoes can be a problem given the water and jingle surrounds.

Overall, could be amazing but lacked a bit of soul and amenity.

Dear Guest
Thank you very much for taking the time to write about us. It’s glad to hear that you liked our cuisine and in room dining options. It is sad to here that you did not enjoy the dip in our swimming pool and the surrounding. We will be totally republishing the swimming pool area in coming May. After that the pool will be bigger and better.
There aren’t mosquitoes as all our lakes have many fish & there is no chance for the growth of mosquitos. Other than that, the Kumbuk trees (Terminalia) which surround all our water bodies work as a natural repellent for mosquitoes. That’s why we did not have any guest complains regarding mosquitoes.
Once again thank you very much for the review and we will look into the points that you have highlighted. Please do visit us when you travel to Sri Lanka again

We had booked for a night & had an unforgettable experience. The resort is designed very sensitively & if full of calm & tranquility. Special mention to Dinesh - the ex. Chef - made us lip smacking food of our choice! Will never forget the hospitality. Love to come back here again for sure! :D

I stayed at Kalundewa Retreat for 3 nights in Feb 2018 and enjoyed absolutely everything that this charming place to offer.

I would love to mention the gentleness and kindness of every member of staff. The food was superb, orchestrated by Mr De Silva; an outstanding chef.

I also have to mention the resident naturalist Tharaka, who has an amazing knowlege of birds and nature.

I will go back there if I had the chance to. leaving was heartbreaking, after 4 days everyone makes you feel such at home.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.

Tharaka was our guide and birder on several occasions. He was extremely polite and friendly. He had excellent knowledge of the local wildlife, particularly the birds.
He very much added to our wonderful experience.
