It's spacious and ok for a hostel. Our room had a balcony with a view of the river but it was actually pretty noisy. Bathroom had hot water and wifi worked well. The lodge was located 10 min walk to the bus station to go up to Machu Picchu and lots of restaurants nearly by. It was nice that breakfast was served starting at 4:45am because of all the hikers. There was bread with butter and jam, scrambled eggs (with a bit too much salt), coffee and tea.

The only thing was that none of the people worked there spoke English and my Spanish was limited. We were trying to get an idea of how early to go to Machu Picchu to see the sunrise and couldn't quite manage to communicate. I was surprised that given that area had so many tourists that they didn't know English at all.

Only stayed one night before our day at Machu Picchu but easily would have stayed another night afterward, if our time would have allowed. Location on the river and close proximity to the hot springs was perfect! Staff was very sweet and someone even met us at the train station to guide us to the hostal personally. Great recommendation by our mountaineering guide at Sky High Andes in Cusco. He set up the reservation and the hostal was nice enough to email us directly to confirm. Will definitely recommend to friends travelling there later this year!

Room Tip: Arrive early in to town and enjoy soaking in the nearby hot springs before the busy trekker crowds arrive.

I booked El Mistico via email for 2 nights after finding no rooms available through expedia etc. Staff replied quickly (In English) and were helpful. The rate was the same as a hostal we stayed in in Cusco, but El Mistico was far superior. Our room was on the top level with a decent balcony. The bed was very comfortable, room was clean and the shower was hot. We originally booked 3 rooms but had to cancel one a couple of days before, which was no problem. The staff were friendly, breakfast was decent (bread, jam, eggs, juice and comp tea and cofee all day).
The hostal is the last one before the hot pools, up the hill. This means you are away from the street noise, older people might not cope with the walk. You can hear the river, but we found it pleasant.
All in all, this hostal (with is more like a hotel) was great value and in my opinion, a great choice.

An amazing and trusted Peruvian hostel owner in Cusco called the owner of this hostel for us and arranged our stay before we even left Cusco for Machu Pichu. After a long day hike on Machu Pichu we walked by the front of this hostel and the owner came outside and called my name! I knew we found good people. My brother and I loved the closeness to Machu Pichu, the mystical paintings and jewelry downstairs, and the breakfast prepared for us. The rooms were beautiful simplicity, no tvs a plus, just beautiful balcony view of a river. Great hot shower, clean, cozy beds. A natural earthy style. Everything up to par. The staff are sweet and friendly. I recommend it and would stay there again.

This hostel was an excellent find in a town full of rather shoddy places (reading other reviews). The rooms by the river with individual balconies are great. You can't here any trains, bars or otherwise, just the river which is a welcome relief from so many other Peruvian hostels. The room itself is very clean with private bathroom and very hot water for 90s a night (double). All in all a really good choice for somewhere in aguas calientes, we were pleased to find such a great place at such a reasonable price.
