And really awful if you are not!!!

Stayed here for 4 days in mid March and felt like I was in China rather than Malaysia. There were about 500 guests at the hotel at the time and 99% were Chinese. During the stay we've seen may be 3-5 other non-chinese couples, that's all. I don't know if there is a special arrangement between Laguna and chinese travel agents, but it seems like everyday they were bringing more and more Chinese guests by busloads (or should I say boat loads).

What’s the problem with that I hear you ask?

Well, due to such a high percentage of guests from one country – hotel is clearly and without shame is tailored for them. That makes Laguna feel like a summer boy-scout camp, where everything is done in particular order and under careful supervision of staff, who act like teachers for unruly school children.

You are in for a shock the moment you arrive. This is the first time when we were greeted and taken to a large auditorium where hotel staff were giving presentation about hotel with clear instructions on how to open your door, how to use the lights and a/c in your room, how to use the bathroom, etc. etc. Thanks for that!

All meals are provided in one place during prescribed hours. You are given a specific table number where you must sit. And boy, it gets busy with everyone rushing to grab some food like they have not eaten for weeks! We were standing in a queue waiting for our turn only to see guests cutting the line (some were very creative coming from behind the counter) in order to grab food, quite often cutting even kids and taking tongs from them! Awful!

Quite often guests take much more food than they need (I would presume) leaving others in a queue waiting even longer for the next “delivery” of food. For example, hotel staff brings 30 chicken satay skewers and first 3 people grab 10 of each, leaving other 5 people in a queue an empty dish. This happened very often and it is very annoying! I guess, we are not used to it, whereas in China it is cut-throat – you gotta grab it first while you can. But hold on, we are not in China.

Snorkelling was even worse. Do not believe other good reviews – you are in for a shock! The thing is – it is not just Laguna which caters for Chinese guests, but pretty much all other resorts on Redang. When they go snorkelling, they go all together. Exactly! So 300 Laguna guests are joined by other 600 guest from other resorts on the island and taken by 10 or more boats to the same place. The result – there are more people than fish as everyone swims in just one place.

Yes, there is plenty of fish (although even more people whom you have to dodge while snorkelling as they jump from above without any hesitation), but the coral is dead from such massive abuse! Just before coming to Redang we spent a few days on another island not far away and it was way, way, way better. We got a private 4 hours snorkelling trip around the island and near-by bays for just the two of us (for RM70), no people, just you, fish, sharks and turtles. Comparing this to the experience in Laguna, I’ve decided after one day that I am better off staying by the pool and avoiding the crowds.

Overall, very bad experience. NOT RECOMMENDED unless you are well prepared to face the crowds and highly controlled resort which often felt like a children camp.

We were 2 families and ate all our meals in the resaurant where we after 2 days got very serious food poisoning, all of us and spent the rest of our stay in bed. It turned out we were not the only family as we met other families in the plane back, also still feeling bad. We mentioned it to the person at the check out counter but they did not seem to bother. Back in KL we heard from the global doctors that a lot of families came back with food poisinging from this resort. If we would not have got the food poisoning I would say it was a nice resort. Nice island and nice beach, good for kids as boats cannot come to this part of the bay. Very convenient as food and snorkling trips were included. We went on the snorkling trips which are beautiful, but very crowded. You will not be snorkeling alone but with more than 100 other people. But still you see a lot of fish.

We booked the 3D/2N snorkeling package and a standard room for lodging. Since a detailed description of package have been provided by previous writers I will not repeat but will add that it was a wonderful experience and we enjoyed tremendously.
The staff were very courteous, food was excellent and the resort was brilliant
As regards the standard room I would say it is near the jetty, a walk of 5 mins from the reception but away from the din at night
Would urge the management to change the following as regards the standard rooms: -
1. There is no exhaust system in the bathroom, only a glass window which opens to the side of the corridor, it would be good if an exhaust fan is installed
2. A towel is placed outside the bathroom door so that one can wipe the toes , it would be good if a coir/ rubber based thing is provided

Having said that, I would like to add the resort was brilliant nonetheless, would strongly urge tourists to visit Laguna

Room Tip: Standard rooms which are odd numbered are towards the jetty, these offer a better view than the even numbered ones , also the odd numbered one e.g. 1005 have king/queen bed + 1 single bed while the even numbered one e.g. 1004 have 3 single beds

Just got back from Laguna a couple of days ago and we had a really fun time. Did the 3d/2n meal/snorkeling package so we were always busy eating, sleeping, or snorkeling. The rooms are quite large and really clean. Bed was very comfortable. Nice size balcony. I'm not big on buffets but was pleasantly surprised at the selections. The pool was never too busy. The hotel staff members were all very helpful and for handling as many people as there were, they did a fantastic job! That was the only thing I would say I didn't too much care for...tons of people packed on these snorkeling trips. I got over it pretty quickly because the sea was huge and you could swim away from everyone. Plus, it was quite orderly.

Redang Island and the surrounding area are absolutely gorgeous! My favorite was snorkeling at the marine park. Got to see very nice corals. Wished we could have stayed longer to explore of the island. There's also some jungle trekking that would have been cool to venture out and do.

Stayed there from the 3rd of March till 7th of March.

Was initially looking at Langkawi but noticed Redang was opened for seasons again, so booked it. Do note they are subjected to Monsoon, if I'm not mistaken, Redang is open from March - May, and Sept - Nov, the other 6 months they are closed due to Monsoon.

Anyways, if you're departing from Singapore, it's a 10 hours bus ride, it's not recommended even though the bus departs at night as the road up was generally quite rocky and even being a light sleeper, sleep didn't come at all.

After the bus ride, it's a 2 hour ferry. This part is subjective, the ferry to the island was via mass ferry, around 100-140 people in one big ferry, quite spacious, but due to the size of the ferry and the speed, it made the journey very taxing, and quite a few people were throwing up, but the ferry back was via a smaller and faster craft, and hence not so rocky making it more comfortable - Hence the lacking of a star to give this place 5 stars.

Now on to the resort, upon arrival, everyone is herded into a communal hall, for a briefing, and then on to the reception. Everyone is given a sour plum drink upon reaching of the reception which helps deal with the sea sickness.

There all passengers will register for their meal tickets, and collection of the key. Depending on the crowd, we got cleared in about 10-15 minutes so not much of a wait.

We booked a seaview room and upon reaching of room, there was no mouldy smell, clean sheets, simple toiletries are provided, flooring was smooth and clean. Basically, it was good and pleasant. Do note that interestingly no tooth brush or tooth paste, but minor inconvenience. Our view was indeed sea view, and though there were a tree or two directly in front of us, no much of a hindrance.

On to the meals, when we booked, all meals are inclusive, Breakfast - 7am to 9.30am, Lunch 12 - 2.30, and dinner 7-9.30. All are buffet style and the spread and quality is pretty much consistent. Nothing to shout about, but decent enough for an inclusive meal. Most nights are BBQ nights, so steaks/lamb/chickenwings/squid was appetizing albeit slightly repetitive.

Outside of this timings, there are not much else, there is an ala-carte restaurant, but it's leaning more towards finer dining hence the pricing is a bit steep. (We had dinner there for 2 and for 1 starter and 2 main courses, came up to about RM 170).

Service was impressive, friendly smiles and courteous, all of the staff that we encountered were helpful, polite and made you feel welcome, not a single unhappy or negative incident was experienced.

Activity wise, there is snorkelling and scuba diving, but as my other half is a bit nervous in water, we didn't go either activity. But no matter, the water from the beach is crystal clear, so much so I actually had to taste it to make sure it was sea water. Crystal clear water literally. Around the rocky areas, small pools of fishes can be seen. Beach was clean and the sand literally flour-like.

All in all, this resort's location, view, beach-front and service was a really good get-away from the hustle and bustle. It's pristine attentiveness to service, and crystal clear beachfront makes this an ideal getaway. The only thing threatening a return would be the ferry to and fro, however, I understand that this is due to their main ferry port being under renovation, and hence the pier they are currently using is around a 2 hour way instaed of the 45-mins expected. So, perhaps that may change that opinion.

Room Tip: We had a sew view room, these were of course lined along the beach. There is a live show at the beach every night, hence if you're an awfully light sleeper, may want to choose pool/garden side. Strongly advise against staying Standard Rooms as it's near the pier instead of the beach. Request for a 2nd floor unit, all are blocks of 2 storeys, hence request for 2nd floor to get a little more privacy. All rooms come with a balcony though for pool view/sea view.
