I'd love to put a 5 star review on this review, purely based on how good a time we had. It's a paradise location with wonderful staff that are warm and helpful. We stayed at the same time as a previous reviewer and have to echo the few minor issues they highlighted. Sarah arrived during our stay and seemed well on the way to sorting them while we were still there.
The bar did run out of wine and beer at one stage which really should have been anticipated and dealt with, and yes there aren't really enough loungers and the few padded covers are old and split so when it rained they became soaked through internally. Food at dinner wasn't always hot but I have to say overall it was pretty good - the chicken ham mentioned was alongside other great food so you didn't have to eat it. In addition the kitchen prepared some wonderful fresh squid during our stay as well as snapper we caught from the jetty using hand lines and bait they provided free of charge.
The accommodation is pretty basic but it's not marketed as 5-star luxury, we finished our holiday at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore to get our fix there! It is clean and the aircon and ceiling fans keep it comfortable in the heat. The only issue with it is monkeys breaking in to raid the fridge, which is a minor inconvenience but makes a great story for the kids to tell their friends.
Snorkelling is excellent right off the jetty with turtles, fish and sharks among the coral. Sand flies and mosquitos weren't a problem, but we did spray ourselves every evening to keep them at bay.
Nothing to do with Bagus, but the only downside with the stay is the ferry to and from the mainland.
Overall I'd highly recommend it as a holiday for relaxation, exploration and getting the kids off the ipads and phones.
Thank you for leaving an honest review as we highly appreciate every word you say in regards to Bagus Place Retreat. I have to say that it was a pleasure to bump into you during my visit to the retreat and i would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused. The matter highlighted would be brought up to the management to ensure that bar is constantly stocked with alcohol for our guest to enjoy and if you ever plan to re-visit, i will ensure that the lounges and covers are in better condition compared to your last visit. That would be my promise to you.
It was a pleasure to host you and your lovely family as our guest during your stay with us despite not reaching to your expectations. We are still in the mist of planning to standardize our standards and we hope that you would see our improvement the next time you visit as our doors will always be open for our returning guest to enjoy our humble paradise. If you have any other personal suggestions on how we could improve, please feel free to contact me at email@example.com. Thank you for giving us your honest feedback and if you ever need a break from the world, you know where to find us. At Bagus Place Retreat, its always another day in paradise.
Bagus Place Retreat
I am rating this resort average for the following reasons. The food is poor 4/10. The bar is inadequately stocked 4/10. Seating availability and comfort 4/10.
I think there is room in the resort for more than 40 people. In contrast the resort proves 12 sun lounges of which only 5 have uninterrupted sun and 9 have cushions. On the deck by the bar there is seating for 13 and only 6 tables of which none have cushions. There are 3 bar stools so seating for 16. On several occasions during our stay the deck was packed and people were not able to find a space to sit and enjoy a drink after dinner. The sun lounge issue was a topic discussed among the guests and seems a simple thing to fix. It caused the beach-towel reservation system to be deployed by some guests which created competition and was a pity.
The location of the resort is fantastic, it is peaceful and the beach is nice. The resort next door helps out with diving and the diving is awesome on Tioman. The snorkeling from their jetty is pretty good with lots of sea life to be seen without going far.
The food. The food was poor. Every evening the meals were cold and one night we were even served 'chicken ham' as a dish (sliced chicken loaf - sandwich chicken). It is an island so we expected to see issues with fresh ingredients but this is really menu a-la-what-have-I-got-in-the-freezer. A simple heating system to keep the buffet warm would be good. There is no alcohol except beer served with meals. Or you can take the 10 minute round trip to the bar.
The meal serving times are far to rigid and there are no other options if you skip or happen to miss a meal time.
The resort managed to run out of beer and wine despite early warnings from guests. The beer fridge runs at about 4 degrees below ambient and is not restocked by staff. We did this ourselves.
I think there are some very simple and small improvements that can easily be made that would lift this from a so-so resort to a fantastic experience.

It is a magical place! We stayed in the hotel next door, but often went to visit Bagus Place retreat for a drink or to eat. The place has wonderful seabed for snorkelling, a lovely little Beach and a very rare calm. the kindness of the people who keep this place really touched us. The bungalows are really in nature with a remarkable view for some of the sea. We ate one evening on the terrace and the meal was delicious, traditional cuisine
If we return, we would certainly go past a few days in this hotel.
We were there between the 7th and July 20, 2017.
Thanks a lot for the very warm welcome!
Philippe and Anne-Marie
