I am rating this resort average for the following reasons. The food is poor 4/10. The bar is inadequately stocked 4/10. Seating availability and comfort 4/10.

I think there is room in the resort for more than 40 people. In contrast the resort proves 12 sun lounges of which only 5 have uninterrupted sun and 9 have cushions. On the deck by the bar there is seating for 13 and only 6 tables of which none have cushions. There are 3 bar stools so seating for 16. On several occasions during our stay the deck was packed and people were not able to find a space to sit and enjoy a drink after dinner. The sun lounge issue was a topic discussed among the guests and seems a simple thing to fix. It caused the beach-towel reservation system to be deployed by some guests which created competition and was a pity.

The location of the resort is fantastic, it is peaceful and the beach is nice. The resort next door helps out with diving and the diving is awesome on Tioman. The snorkeling from their jetty is pretty good with lots of sea life to be seen without going far.

The food. The food was poor. Every evening the meals were cold and one night we were even served 'chicken ham' as a dish (sliced chicken loaf - sandwich chicken). It is an island so we expected to see issues with fresh ingredients but this is really menu a-la-what-have-I-got-in-the-freezer. A simple heating system to keep the buffet warm would be good. There is no alcohol except beer served with meals. Or you can take the 10 minute round trip to the bar.

The meal serving times are far to rigid and there are no other options if you skip or happen to miss a meal time.

The resort managed to run out of beer and wine despite early warnings from guests. The beer fridge runs at about 4 degrees below ambient and is not restocked by staff. We did this ourselves.

I think there are some very simple and small improvements that can easily be made that would lift this from a so-so resort to a fantastic experience.

Room Tip: Closer to the water is best!

It is a magical place! We stayed in the hotel next door, but often went to visit Bagus Place retreat for a drink or to eat. The place has wonderful seabed for snorkelling, a lovely little Beach and a very rare calm. the kindness of the people who keep this place really touched us. The bungalows are really in nature with a remarkable view for some of the sea. We ate one evening on the terrace and the meal was delicious, traditional cuisine
very refined.
If we return, we would certainly go past a few days in this hotel.
We were there between the 7th and July 20, 2017.
Thanks a lot for the very warm welcome!

Bagus is great to recharge your batteries. Fantastic local kitchen, super friendly staff. You can do jungle trekking, snorkeling and diving. And after a full day of adventures, enjoy a sundowner on the jetty bar. Thanks to Afzan, Mirul and the whole Bagus Team for the great time

Simply AMAZING. A place in heaven!
Like their website says: "A peaceful sanctuary of breathtaking natural beauty", no other definition could be more suitable for this structure!
We arrived by ferry at Genting Jetty and were immediately taken to Bagus Place (15mins Boat ride). I just had to text them after I boarded on the ferry that took us from Tanjung Gemok to Tioman Island. They were there waiting for us!
Once arrived in "paradise" we were immediately received by the SUPER friendly and accommodating staff of Bagus. Mirul, Mata, Erik and all the other guys of the staff have been super nice and helpful throughout our whole stay.
We had the "Boat House" with Half-Board package (Breakfast and Dinner).
The "Boat house" is really stunning. I personally consider it the best "room" of the whole resort. Surrounded by the trees, with monkeys jumping on them, just a few meters from the sea. Enjoying the amazing view from the deck of our house was really charming and relaxing. We were very lucky in finding it available!
Food was simply surprising. We had a super tasty BBQ at our arrival. Then, the following days, we felt in love with the Malaysian food provided us every night at the "Twin Peaks" Restaurant. We had, every evening, a very impressive selection of local food, which we really enjoyed. Breakfast is rich as well (so rich that we didn't even use to have lunch!).
Nature is the masterpiece of Bagus Place. Snorkling and diving in a "coral garden" with turtles, black fin sharks, bumper heads and plenty of others colored fishes was an astonishing experience.
Chilling out on the jetty having a dive every now and then, having a drink (really well made) at the beautiful stilt bar enjoying the sunset was really relaxing.
Wi-Fi signal is ok if you just want to send text messages via WhatsApp. We were told the signal is not that good but we had no need to use it in other ways!
If you're staying for 5 days I definitely suggest you to have a walk to the Waterfalls and the small village of Kampong Mukut. The village is about 4km from Bagus, while waterfalls are about 2 more km far away from the village. Walking there you'll meet funny cheeky monkeys, really impressive lizards and typical jungle fauna. We went to the village by boat (service provided by the structure). From there we walk to waterfalls and all the way back to Bagus Place, thoughout a really lush jungle, for a total of about 8km trekking.
I would define Bagus Place as one of the best places I've ever been and We'll definitely come back there as soon as we'll have another chance to travel to Malaysia!

Dear Stefano,

It is great to hear that you had a memorable stay with us and thank you for praising our service. The boat house indeed has a special character of its own to surprise our guest in so many ways possible, even the monkeys in Tioman Island has an attraction to it too. We invest a lot of time in effort to train our team to ensure the highest level of personalized service and we are glad that they are able to make you feel at home. As we are a retreat, we believe that nature can be as impressive as wifi at our place because we encourage our guest to enjoy the jungle breeze and the sound of the sea, which is something hard to find when you're living in the city.

Once again, thank you so much for your feedback. We will take your comments for further encouragement within the team to ensure personal service and warm welcome is assured during your next visit. Please do not hesitate to contact again when you plan to revisit as you can prepare yourself for a relaxing welcome at our humble paradise at Bagus Place Retreat. We are looking forward to welcome you again soon!

We had 6 wonderful days at Bagus and like paradise we had angels arond us they, do what they can to make every day to another day in paradise :-). We will never forget this days and there is nothing that we missed. The only problem are the monkeys, but this is the price for staying in and with nature.

Room Tip: They are all wonderful, we stay at the rockhouse and there was only a little problem with the monkeys, be aware they can visit you without a open window or door

Dear Rene Weise,

Greetings From Bagus Place Retreat Another Day In Paradise!

Thank you for your kinds words and the amount of time you took to share this with us. we are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us :).
We hope the Monkeys weren't too much of a bother for you during your stay. Monkeys being in their natural habitat, we can only do out best to minimize their nuisance. After all, what is nature without the presence of Monkeys right? Hehehe....

On behalf of our team here at Bagus Place Retreat, we look forward to welcome you back to our paradise in the future.

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Ms. Ziah (on behalf of Manager - Ms.Sara)
