Choosing this hotel for our group prior to our visit to Laos. Similar to all post earlier, the hotel is definitely old. However, the room is spacious and clean. If the hotel conduct renovation, it is not difficult for them to return to 4 stars international standard. It is true that the room is dated. I've got the Junior suite which is very large and having stunning views for Mekong River and Vientiane. Breakfast is average at best. But generally, this is one of the most value for money and nice hotel. The manager at the counter is helpful and very friendly.

Room Tip: The Junior Suite may be old but having stunning views of Laos and Mekong

We stayed one night at hotel Royal Mekong Nong Khai. Friendly staff and big clean room. The hotel is an old hotel. There is no doubt, which once the hotel has been of a high standard, but not today.
The room need a fresh up or renovation. With a location by Mekong River, it would have been great with a balcony, but none of the room had one. Even that the hotel is a combined conference hotel and a hotel for relaxing.
We stayed at the hotel in low season, so breakfast was a little Spartan because the normal buffet breakfast was changed to a little standard plate, which not was enough.
But for one night, the hotel is ok.

Room Tip: Every room have the view to Mekong River, so all will have a good view. Half of the hotel has room against the swimmingpool, so in season there might be more noise in that part of the hotel.

...it was the number one hotel in Nong Khai. You will see the photo with crowned royalties in the lobby.... Now you might feel the charme of former decades
Rooms are spacy with good beds and big window overlooking the Bridge of Friendship, the Mekong and the outdoor pool, which is not refreshened because of high temperatures in May. Also the pool is public. So school students will jump in theit dress into the pool. Result: Pool is dirty. Only to use in the morning.
Bathroom is old fashioned with a 30 years old bath tub and a shower within.
In May only a handful customers. Therefore in the restaurant NO buffet, NO air condition. Saved costs. Outside aroud the pool grass and weed is growing. A rotten hotel

Room Tip: rooms facing Mekong

This hotel is a big concrete monster with distinct lack of charm but plenty of fungus growing on the walls. We got an up-grade (which was mightily nice of the reception and probably the reason why I've not rated it as terrible!) and I don't even dare to think about what it would have been otherwise. The cupboard with the fridge was rotten, the bathroom was old and the shower could only dribble down along the shower wall, so washing hair was very difficult. The coffee at breakfast was horribly and almost undrinkable, the food was just passable (well, we stuck to toast and fruit!). The furniture in the reception were rather nice, but some of them were repaired by being taped. It is 4-5 km away from town, so unless you have a car you are really stuck here. Good news is that the trendy coffee shop across the road is nice and has excellent toilets (as is much cheaper than the hotel which some odd reason was vastly overpriced) and the Chinese restaurant 400 m down the road is half-decent. Awful place, do stay away!
