On a hot day we visited the lovely Botanical Gardens, a nice break from the hectic city.

Not that I have a large experience on this subject, but it was impressive. The bucollic gardens, the history in it, the walks... should have programmed myself to stay a bit longer there. Though ticketing staff complaind about my R$50 note (which was not a good start) the others were very helpful and smiley.

Jardim Botanico is one of my favourite places in Rio! I have been there on many , many occasions and the lush green trees, the landscaped Japanese gardens and the soft dribble dribble of the waterways and small waterfalls never cease to awe me! The surroundings are so calm and the trees so huge that you feel an immediate bond to nature and the natural world! If you are very quiet and comtemplative you can spot tropical birds, caxingueles(Brazilian squirrels), chipmunks and monkeys. They have a great children's play area, full of slides, swings, and sandboxes, with superbly well kept children's bathrooms and even a water tap to clean sandy feet! The picnic area is close to the children's area and there is a snack shack which serves empanadas, cheese bread, polvilho biscuits, coffee, iced tea and ice-cream! When you feel you need a break from the beach, head to this beautiful garden, and explore its alleys and ladscaped ponds!

It is very impressive and the trees are beautiful but it was 38 degrees and i was told by a large gentleman with a gun almost the same size as him to put my shirt on. There were little waterfalls, statues, restaurant and interesting birds there, so it was well worth it. Also had amazing graffiti outside the entrance

This is a nice place to wander through for an hour or two. Many different trees, huge lily pads, orchids, kings palms. Also don't miss Parque Lage about a 1/2 mile away. This is wider with monkeys and more of a jungle atmosphere. Also possible to hike to Corcovado from Parque Lage. Have Fun!
