Pousada Classica is in beautiful colonial building in the one of the main streets in Ouro Preto. Location is amazing, just next to Tiradentes square, within walking distance of everything in the town. It is very pleasant place - rooms are very nice and clean with "old school" furniture and feel. If you are worried for the street noise, just ask for the room that is not on the street side, and you will not have any problems. My husband and I stayed there during Samana Santa (when street decorations and partying last the whole night) and we did not hear anything.
Breakfast is great, they really had a huge variety of different things offered. All in all, really charming hotel, close to everything with good service and also very good prices comparing with similar properties is Ouro Preto.

We stayed 2 nights at Pousada Classica: The place is a bit tricky to find (the sign in the street is very small) but it is perfectly located in the most vibrant street of Ouro Preto and is 1mn walking from Tiradentes square. The pousada is decent although not charming. Service is minimal and breakfeast isn't amazing. The room is clean and big enough. I advise not to take a room on the street as it is very noisy and also avoid room n°1 which opens directly in the lobby so you're sure to be awaken by groups leaving at 5am!!! Good point for the free parking, which is especially important in Ouro Preto where it's extremely difficult to park.

This pousada provides excellent customer service and a great afternoon tea and traditional Brazilian breakfast. The rooms are very clean and the building is very historical. The location is great with walking distance to the bus station and in the middle of all the main attractions in Ouro Preto. Now, if you want peace and quite, don't stay on the street side of the pousada. The staff is VERY upfront with their guests about the noise across the street in the bars, so nobody will be suprised - you have been warned. If you cannot handle the noise (although staying in the rooms with a balcony was very cool), then get a room towards the back and you should be fine.

Average size rooms and bathroom, small TV with cable (only CNN), A/C, hairdryer. Do not choose front rooms, since there is a lot of noise from the streets (due to a large number of students in the city and a front door bar). Plenty of restaurants by walking distance. It offers private parking, some hotels don't offer so check it in advance.
For average staying and economy budget, Classica is an excellent option: in the same neightborhood as Mondengo and Rosario, less than one block from Tiradentes square, one block from the main church (Sao Francisco). The term "pousada" differs from "Hotel". Pousada tends to be more family-friendly but simplier than regular hotel.
According to local magazines and guide 4 Rodas, P. Classica has good cost-benefit analysis - a quality staying with a decent price. If you're not staying at Semana Santa (one week of April) or Carnival (one week of february), rates drop 40%. So, it's actually half price of any other good hotel in the city. If you're a looking for a more "colonial" staying, with furniture of 17th Century, then Pousada do Mondengo might be your choice. If you're looking for luxury or very confortable staying, but do not mind about ancient furniture, you will be pleased with Solar do Rosario, both hotels are the best in the city (keep in mind you will have to pay the price for all this luxury. April 2007: USD$ 180. Pousada Classica: less than $100). If you quote by email, ask for the discount offered in the website. Sometimes the rates may be equivalent to Rosario or Mondengo. In this case, prefer Rosario or Mondengo. Another popular choice for foreign tourist is Grande Hotel, designed by famous architecture Oscar Niemeyer, it's located in a quieter place.
As another TripAdvisor wrote, it offers continental breakfast - pastries, milk, coffee and other stuff - even though it has a good selection, it could be much better compared to other Brazilian lodgings - and tea treat in the afternoon.
Foreign tourist may have problem with staff, because most of the city is not prepared for foreigners, they barely speak English (the entire city). If you usually need further assistance, then I strongly recommend Rosario and Mondengo.

My wife and I visited the charming town of Ouro Preto and decided to stay at a centraly located pousada so that we can experience the town's life. We chose Pousada Clasica, which indeed is well located but we did not know how noisy is was going to be (right next to there are many pubs where people show up with motorcycles to drink and socialize). It was so bad that we could not sleep at all until 3 am when most people are gone for the night.

On top of that the room was dirty. We had to call three times until they finally cleaned the bathroom to ok standards. People in the front desk treated us like "You Americans always giving trouble".

After two terribles days we decided to move to "Pousada do Mondego", which we strongly recommend. We wish we knew about this place before. It's clean, staff are friendly, and just a block from all the noise so that during the day you enjoy the town and after 11:00 PM you can sleep. Funny thing is that costs the same.
