This landmark hotel designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the famous Brazilian architect, had been on my bucket list for more than half a century. On learning that I would be staying there for a special event, I was more than excited.
Our arrival was dampened by the news that the building has no elevator. Nor was there anyone to help us with our luggage. We had to schlep our bags up two long flights of stairs. I’m a senior with mobility problems and there were no handicap provisions whatsoever.
We were in a suite ("apartment") with an all-glass two-story view of the colonial city. Each suite has two levels, the beds being reached via a perilous wooden spiral staircase with steep steps--beautiful, but very impractical. One has the choice of lugging bags up the staircase or leaving them down below. I wasn't surprised to learn that a cousin of one of my companions had once fallen on the steps and hurt her head.
I think the architect's idea in designing the suite on two levels was for guests to be able to pull the tall curtains and see an expansive view of the city. Since we didn't spend much time in our rooms, we were never able to appreciate the effect.
Amenities like the TV sets and refrigerators were out of date and some of the new replacements, like the bathroom light fixtures, were garish and cheapened the overall effect.
The best feature was the open first floor, divided between the restaurant and the spacious lobby, furnished in luxurious Midcentury Modern leather sofas and armchairs.
The food in the restaurant was very good.
However, given the chance to return to this colonial city, I would definitely not stay at the Grande Hotel Ouro Preto again.

Room Tip: If you don't want to fuss with the spiral staircase, ask for a room facing the back.

I stayed first in a room on the back side of this hotel and the second time I stayed in a very nicer room facing the city of Ouro Preto, having a wonderful view from the balcony , I would recommend to choose this apartment, it is a duplex one . Breakfast was great and the staff was very friendly and helpfull too.

Good hotel located in the center of town. It's just a short walk to all the historic sites in Ouro Preto. The hotel has nice views of the town's steep hills and churches.

The hotel itself is just basic. The rooms are fine, a little dated. Mine didn't have air conditioning, which was fine temperature-wise, but the rooms are pretty stuffy with little air circulating with window wide open. For a few nights stay, it's fine.

The staff are very nice and accommodating. The breakfast, included in the rate, is great. Skip the restaurant for dinner, there's better food to be had in any direction. Parking is available, which is sometimes tough to find in Ouro Preto.

If yiu are there for Easter, the processions will pass within a block of the hotel. Great location!

Perfect location in the middle of the town, free parking. Rooms are clean, furniture a bit outdated, great view from the balcony. The penthouse-style-suites are large and worth the additional money. Very friendly, helpful staff.

Room Tip: Suites are spacious and worth the money.

A striking building from the 1940s by Oscar Niemeyer with some good period furniture and effects. The staff are really helpful and very pleasant; it was a great joy to have all our luggage carried up to our room (it is a hilly location!). Good parking and an excellent central location with a number of good restaurants nearby. The hotel, too, has a good restaurant and the typically Brasilian breakfast is very good and available until 1000.
We had the presidential suite, Room 01, which is comfortable and provides a double bedded room, a twin bedded room with a single bedded annexe, a bathroom and a sizeable lounge and terrace with excellent views.
I award four stars, rather than five, because I think maintenance standards could be higher and I observed several instances where this notable edifice had not been maintained as well as possible. Some instances of furniture and fixtures were not completely up to scratch. The free wifi was a bit ragged and did not work until one complained.
Notwithstanding, I would thoroughly recommend and certainly use again.

Room Tip: Try to overlook the front aspect.
