It was a great meeting to use a reason to visit KL for the first time. The landscape and tree lines reminded me of South India - not that far awy to the north!
The Hotel looks and is grand.
Great venue for a big meeting.
Food was very good, service very courteous.
Only blip on the whole deal was the room - which was spacious with a view of the Petronas tower - once seen never forgotten.
The kettle leaked and was promptly replaced by another one that leaked. And room cleaning was not up to the standard of the rest of the hotel. But that said, it was a memorable few days and I look forward to returning to KL.

Room Tip: Walking distance of the Petronas towers and so on. A/C works well - very important in S Asia.

This is a wonderful hotel, which manages to combine the mystique of the orient with the convenience of a modern hotel. Located a five minute walk from the fabulous Pavilion Mall, this is an elegant place to stay. Our room was airy and bright, and the bed was fantastically comfortable. The room was well appointed with a safe, and the usual complementary teas and coffees. The Warisan Cafe in the hotel serves a great breakfast, with choices that cover all palates, including Malaysian Rotis, Rendang curry with either chicken or lamb, and western style cooked breakfasts- but if you are expecting egg and bacon, forget it as it’s not on the menu. You will get chicken or beef sausages, which are really tasty. Good selection of coffees and teas. All of the staff are so helpful and courteous, making our stay truly memorable. I really recommend this hotel.

We arrived on a weekday afternoon at 4pm, and after a short delay (they did not have rooms ready) were checked into our room. The premiere room on the 2nd floor was spacious with a large bathroom, and a balcony that had direct access to the pool area.

We did notice that the carpets were frayed in the hallway and in the room itself, and the bathroom was not very clean at the corners and there was what appeared to be either soot or cobwebs under the sink.

This was bad, but it got worse when we discovered a live lizard in our bathroom at 10 pm. It's a tropical country so I can understand it, but only just. After several calls to housekeeping to get rid of the animal, finally someone showed up after 20 minutes, and then happily proceeded to chase the lizard under the sink. Some more complaining led to 2 more housekeeping staff showing up, just as ineffectual as the first.

Eventually I called the duty manager and explained to her that she either needed to get rid of the lizard or change my room, her choice. She changed my room. However, a more professionally run hotel would have ensured an apology for the trouble we faced late at night and how long it took them to handle it. Nothing.

The new room was a suite, but even here the carpets and the bathrooms could have been cleaner. After the lizard incident, we spent 4 fairly comfortable nights in the hotel, marred only by some poor housekeeping - torn and stained towels, no water replenished in the room one night.

The breakfast at the Warisan cafe was included in our rate and it was super in terms of variety and taste. If only the staff around the tables had been a little better trained, the breakfast would have been perfect. As it was, they were often busy chatting among themselves and even gently nudged a guest away at the coffee machine to try and get in first.

In summary, the positives -

1) This property is grand and the rooms are large and comfortable, although they have seen better days

2) The location is reasonable, a 10 minute walk (a lot of construction around, so not a pleasant walk) from Bukit Bintang and the Pavilion mall, and a 15 minute walk to Suria KLCC and the twin towers

3) The food is uniformly good, especially at breakfast

And the negatives -

1) Very poor cleaning standards for a "5 star" hotel, and the rooms and hallways are starting to show their age. We got torn and stained towels in our room as well, so obviously cleaning is not their thing.

2) A lot of the staff, especially the housekeeping and wait staff, are very poorly trained. It's obvious the hotel has hired cheap immigrant labour from a nearby country (I happen to speak their language, so I could actually understand most of their too loud conversations), which is absolutely fine. However, they need to invest time in training their staff so that they know what they are doing.

3) This is minor - but a must these days for a hotel of this standard. No international or USB charging points in the room, we had to use an adapter.

Had it not been for the lizard incident, and how poorly it was handled, I might have given this hotel a 4 out of 5. If only they focussed a bit more on hygiene and staff training.

There are better options in KL, but the Royale Chulan is not totally without merit.

Room Tip: Higher rooms in the front have a good view of the twin towers

In a city of fast pace and high rise this hotel is a haven of tranquility. The rooms are beautiful, the staff are delightful, the food is fabulous and the location excellent. Just a short walk away are numerous shopping centres, a monorail station and a hub stop for all of the free bus routes. The twin towers are a 20 minute walk away through a beautiful park. If you are going to KL treat yourself with a stay at the Royal Chulan
