Had heard this was good and it didn't disappoint.

I have travelled to Japan for 23 years and developed a love for okonomiyaki, especially the classic Osaka style. This was as good as those classic cook-at-your-table places around the Osaka-shi station in the 2000's, and all the ancilliary dishes are great too. We started with mushrooms, which we well prepared, and then moved onto classic style okonomiyaki, while my wife had the shrimp one.
The key aspect of this place is that it is very small and out of the way. Generally, it is supporting people in the neighbourhood, but despite a large group waiting out in the cold, the husband and wife team found a corner at the grill for us to seat. I think they knew we had made a special trip to experience this.
After we were done, they called a taxi for us. They were especially kind, and it was great to see their skills in action in preparing these hearty dishes.

Almost feel bad to recommend them, as I know they will be more busy. Their seating is 6 people at the counter, and two tables of 4. So its a small place!

This is a great restaurant. It has everything you want from it.
Food - brilliant and a good selection (I had the modern okonomiyaki and it was amazing)
Decor - cozy with a teppanyaki to watch while you eat!
Service - brilliant. A family run restaurant and it feels personal

Stop on whilst you're visiting one of the nearby temples; you won't regret it!

I can say that, without a doubt, this was the best food I had in Kyoto. We're vegetarian and had the plain and tomato okonomoyaki which were both absolutely delicious. Katsu asked us, previous to knowing we don't eat meat, if we were happy to have fish flakes and seaweed on top. They also made us a yakisoba substituting the pork that was on the menu for mushroom. Katsu and Chizu were the friendliest people and we spent most of the meal chatting with them, which was lovely.

The price was also very reasonable. We had two okonomoyaki, a yakisoba, and three drinks and it was 2800¥.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough. It's a bit out of the way but definitely worth the trip. I wish we had time to go back!

This was one the best food experiences I had in Japan. The food was tasty and cheap, and you could see how they prepared everything. By far the best part was the hospitality of Chizu and her husband. We talked for hours. They were the best.
